Carlos Colon vs Stan Hansen (“Steel Cage Match” – WWC – 3/14/1987) The blowoff for the greatest in ring feud in history. Every match these two had together was fantastic and this is the peak. I know most people prefer the bull rope match and think the finish is disappointing. These people are misguided. This match is everything The finish is awesome and makes perfect sense within the context of the feud and what is happening outside of the cage. Just an awesome match. Top 10 Contender.

Second
I will disagree (fairly strongly) that this is their peak. The bullrope match is much better to me. I am 100% one of those people that think the ending is disappointing too. To me, this might raise an interesting philosophical debate. I get that it makes sense in the context and how they were transitioning out of the feud and into the next story. I think as far as overall feud/rivalry and storytelling and transitioning goes, this is tops. But as a match, the bullrope match hangs together better and is more coherent. Part of this is also on the fact that escape cage matches aren't my favorite. It isn't that I think it is inherently bad, it just isn't my cup of tea most of the time. That makes, for me, the body of the match that much more impressive, but the ending that much more disappointing. I think they put on a clinic in how to work a match like this without abandoning a traditional psychology (which I think a lot of escape matches tend to do) and lots of the logic and characteristics that I tend to like in my matches. Then the end sort of abandons that as they transition Colon to his next thing. The match has great drama. It is probably Colon's best performance in the feud. Again, as far as big picture stuff, I love it, but this isn't best feuds or rivalries or stories.
All that said, I will still second its nomination. The match is excellent. I will be interested to rewatch the feud. It haven't in some time. Its possible my tune will change, but as of right now, this one has a shot at making my list, but it isn't a lock.

One of my 5 star matches and I absolutely love the finish. Carlos is such a babyface that of course he thinks running out of the cage to save his mates is more important than further brutalising Hansen, who's already beaten at this point anyway. Makes total sense. Plus Hansen's selling in this match is incredible, his transformation from a big bully into this terrified little man shaking in realisation that he's bitten off more than he can chew is perfect.

I’d written that their treatment of the bullrope match was like the Bret-Owen escape-the-cage match and then damn it they go and have one of those too. A great brawl, as is to be expected, that made use of the cage and had attempts to escape the cage without hurting the narrative of the match. It ends with Hansen in a figure four and a brawl breaking out at ringside. Colon escapes the cage and joins the brawl. I have this second to their bullrope match and I do like the finish.

I probably haven't watched this since 2016 or 17. I should rewatch it. My tastes now would probably be kinder to the finish. I still suspect the bullrope match is more my jam, but I suspect I'll like this more in 2023
