Carlos Colon vs. Hercules Ayala (WWC Texas Death Match - 1987)
Can't find the exact date on this, only the year. Either way, might be one of the best brawls ever. It seems like a prerequisite for every WWC match to have blood, but Colon dang near breaks the Muta scale on this one. And the blood loss ends up being not just an integral part of the match, but the finish as well.
We join this match in progress as Ayala is smashing Colon with a huge table. There's something just so cool about wrestling on a baseball field. Really gives that "anything can happen" feel to these wild brawls. Colon rallies back and I have to say, he might have the best babyface fire of anyone I've ever seen. I've touched upon this before, but I feel like all the praise Lawler gets (which is more or less warranted) seems more applicable to Colon. He erupts like a madman with all the righteous fury in the world, throwing as many punches and headbutts as he can. There's a lot of legwork in this match as well, as both are masters of the figure four and know leg damage will make it harder for their opponent to beat the ref's count. Eventually, Chicky Starr (one of the best names ever) slips Ayala some brass knucks and Colon is bloodied up even more than before. Colon's selling is fantastic as he seems to slip in and out of consciousness, struggling to fight back. He puts up a valiant effort but the blood loss is too much and Ayala pummels him until the ref is forced to call it.
This was a tremendous brawl with a pretty creative finish considering the Texas Death Match stipulation. Ayala was a great bruiser who was also not above taking shortcuts while Colon's face work was out of this world. God, WWC has been such a revelation.
