If someone asked me what could BUll Nakano have done differently to be a better wrestler? I'd say nothing. Bull Nakano was perfect. "What if she spit mist?" You ask? Well you've obliterated my fucking brain now.
Yall.
Bull Nakano is spitting mist in this match where she tags with Aja Kong and they stab Akira Hokuto in her bloody face. Give me all of this.
Aja's most impressive early performance that I've seen. She was great here.
But OMFG Bull Nakano is spitting mist.

Seconding this - I've tried joshi a few times without really getting hooked on it, but this had me completely spellbound. A brutal match with Hokuto, in particular, looking like she should just try to escape with her life at times; all four women played their roles brilliantly. (And love the mist!)

What do you think it was that drew you in about this match compared to some other Joshi matches you've seen before? I ask because I'm happy to make recommendations!

Good question! I think one of the things is that in general I prefer stuff with clear faces and heels and it's such a masterful display in that respect - I was really desperate to see the Wolves win this one because of how horrific Bull and Aja were on offense. Would love to check out some more if you have recs, thanks.

When we talk about great series/feuds in wrestling people should think about Akira Hokuto & Partner vs. Bull Nakano & Aja Kong. I'm now at 5 iterations of it from 1989-94 which were all great and there's even a long-term story going there through to Kandori being the partner.

Off the top of my head, It sounds like the high end 80s joshi might be a little more your thing, marksman. I'm sure elliott will have all the recs I would and more, but I'll come back tonight when I have a minute and add some if needed.

Cap, Elliott - would really appreciate that, thank you! a few quick recs based your preference for that dynamic. I also haven't gotten time to watch this match, so I'm not 100% sure how it relates to my recs, but I am going to stick to 1980s (and one 1990) matches. If stuff in here floats your boat I may have some other recs. I cherrypick a lot of the best stuff in joshi so others may even have deeper cut recs as well.
Monster Ripper vs Jaguar Yokota (1982) I can't find a more specific date. Monster Ripper is really underrated I think and Jaguar is a fantastic babyface. You get some blood, brutality, and the smaller Jaguar playing underdog wonderfully.
Jaguar Yokota vs Devil Masami (7/19/1982) Two of the best to ever do it if I'm being honest. This one starts with big hats and ends with Masami trying to murder Yokota as they swing weapons at each other with some real malice.
Jaguar Yokota vs La Galactica (2/27/1985)
This is my favorite of the lot I will send you and the highest rec given your taste. This is clear heel v face and some absolute craziness.
Atrocious Alliance vs The Crush Gals (10/10/1985)*
It doesn't get much better in terms of heel duos that Dump Matsimoto and Bull Nakano in the 1980s. This one is violence and chaos and features lots of ass kicking to put the sympathy on the faces. See my note below if you like this.
Bull Nakano and Candor Saito vs The Crush Gals (10/11/1987) Probably my second favorite joshi tag ever, at least top 5-ish. Again, Bull Nakano is just the best. 80s joshi spans from absolutely chaos and actual assault to classic back and forth techincal wrestling. This hits the sweet spot for me, leaning towards the former, but not quite off the rails.
Shinobu Kandori vs Harley Saito (7/19/1990) This one is a little grappling heavy, but Kandori puts some sympathy on Saito, as she is known to do.
*If you like that 10/10/85 match and you like Dump in that match then you should check out her crazy singles matches vs Nagayo (8/28/85 and 11/7/86) and Omori (3/20/1986). I really really like them, but they push right up against the limits in terms of being unhinged and violent and chaotic in a way that I think turn some fans off.
Two other recs I would make if you find yourself getting into this era of joshi a little would be Devil Masami vs Chingusa Nagayo (8/22/1985) Shinobu Kandori vs Devil Masami (7/14/1988) I personally think both are elite matches, but they probably don't draw those heel/face lines quite as clearly in a vacuum. Based on the little knowledge I have, my guess is you would get more out of them after you have seen these people in other settings and gotten some momentum for joshi. The former is a classic title match. The latter is the established presence and the up and comer trying to out mean each other.

Being a relative novice, Joshi in general doesn’t rank high with me but that’s not to say I don’t think it’s great. I’m just less viscerally connected to it. That being said, Bull Nakano always ranks high with me (the way Volk Han does for shoot style matches.)
I was actually looking to watch more Bull Nakano recently and this did a wonderful service for me. I’m not sure if, it would fit into my list but I definitely think this one is worth the consideration.
