I do think it is appropriate to rate this as a whole video though. Lance riffing before the guys come out, Funk cursing out Lawler pre match, Funk cursing out Lawler post match. All of that counts. But that's not unique to how I view wrestling or rate stuff. Savage vs Warrior didn't end with the 3 count hahaha!

It has been forever since I have seen this. It is funny going back and seeing what I said in 2017, because it hasn't made a list for me yet. I am not sure if that is because it sits just under the cut for me or if it is a matter of the ebbs and flows of my watching.
I would say this is somewhat challenging to compare to a traditional match, but more in the way some of the less abstract cinematic matches are than anything else really.

Yeah... I think you gotta rate the whole thing, but I do that with lots of matches, especially those with good post matches.

Jerry Lawler v. Terry Funk (CWA - 4/6/1981)
Match Type: Empty Arena Match
Run-Time: 14:56
2021 Ranking: 53 (171)
There’s two things that I always repeat myself over and over with. Professional wrestling and Sport Entertainment are the exact same thing, one is just a corporate branded term by a specific company. The other is just the thing. Also, I don’t debate the “Match v. angle” issue. If professional wrestling were a legitimate sport then obviously the match would be only what happens between the two bells but it’s a whole thing. It’s a whole, cool, weird thing. And this is the coolest, weird whole thing I’ve ever seen.
Funk’s heel work here is nothing short of genius. He’s brash, trash talking and ready to throw the match out because Lawler is late (he was also late). He is an unrelenting disposable bully but the second he gets a taste of his own medicine he’s squealing and yelling “MY EYE!” And crying his way out of the match.
Anybody can understand this. This is just some of the most fun you could ever have watching anything.
I wish Bryan and Sami Zayn just copied this match for their COVID mania match.

This is an absolutely classic moment and a great match. I know Mick Foley wrote in his book that everyone forgets that other than the finish the match sucked and the footage shows this isn't true. It isn't a bad match with a great finish, it is a great match with an epic finish. How it stands against everything else to be watched for this list remains to be seen but I am glad to have re-watched this. Re-watched this today. This is the height of theatre. Just an amazing vocal performance from Funk with him calling out Lawler before the match and still sparingly doing so after while screaming “My eye!!!” The action was great here and the scene where Lawler was standing over Lawler with the spike harkened back to Abdullah going at Terry with a fork in 1977. International long-term storytelling. It’s hard to top this one.

After watching so much amazing stuff for this project, one thing I really appreciate is something that tells it's story in a unique way. This is definitely that. Such a poetic morality tale of Funk getting his comeuppance .

I voted it #11 in the end. If it was a list of "matches all wrestling fans must watch before they die" this would be #1. The whole segment just embodies pro wrestling for me.

This thing encapsulates pro wrestling so perfectly. I always says that the crowd is what makes a match. They are as much a part of it as the participants but this breaks that down differently. We’re going on the ride at home. The same emotions but it feels personal and not in a great tv wrestling match way.
They’ve boiled every aspect of pro wrestling down & perfected it. And nothing like this was ever able to be done again.
It’s also just hilarious
