That andre match is really good too though.
I get why this feels somewhat like a showcase for Funk, pulling the much maligned Race up to the level of match he otherwise likely would never get to, but I want to give Race a little credit here. Race is a very particular type of athlete from a very particular time. He is the kinda guy who really doesn't look that scary and he doesn't move like a real athlete most of the time. If you didn't know better you could be convinced he sells used cars or owns a strip club in like Dayton, OH or something. On the other hand, you do know better. He is tough as nails, could smoke cigars, drink beer, and whip half the town without much thought. He is of the ilk of those 70s NFL players that would drink and smoke on the sidelines or whatever. Race brings that balanced with this sort of championship swagger to most matches he is in to varying degrees, then he bumps around and sell and even plays chicken shit heel. Race's greatest strength was cultivating a really subtle and timely persona (that was probably mostly him) and then using it to his further the story or match. He brings that in a real way here. Don't hear what I am not saying. Funk is clearly in the drivers seat and in terms of telling a story and getting it over, Funk deserves the lion's share of credit, but I do think race pulls more than his weight even in this one. I don't think that finish - which is what puts this match in the top 100 for me - has nearly the effect it does without Race being Race.

Race definitely looks like a scary 70s tough guy though. Think longshoreman.

Does anyone know what move made Funk bleed? Was it one of the punches Race threw while funk was working the toehold?

I rewatched it, the only thing about this match that I don't like is the doctor stoppage but the match itself is a top 100 match ever without a shadow of a doubt.
