I was just watching the second youtube episode of the AEW women's tournament over lunch and I got to thinking... is AEW onto something by using youtube in the way that they do? I haven't engaged this as a topic much, but my general feeling is that people see Dark as... well... dark matches, which is fair. In turn it seems that hte general feeling has been "stuff goes on youtube when it doesn't deserve to be on dynamite". I think that is categorically wrong, but I also don't think that is how AEW thinks of it anymore. Sure, most of dark is developmental, but AEW uses youtube for in cannon stuff like the women's tag team tournament and this tournament. They also use it for quasi-canon stuff like Being the Elite (which I have never watched, but I understand it to be quasi-canon?).
I was sort of skeptical about this tournament being on youtube, but I kinda think it is the perfect place for a lot of this stuff. It provides them with more freedom to do goofy, fun wrestling (see the first youtube episode of this tournament) or give people a shot at a mini banger (see both episodes). It serves to slowly introduce the joshi workers to the American audience, starting with those who are already interested and/or invested in the product enough. I also imagine they are making money on this, not just their episode, but having regular programs and specials on youtube has to be building their channel and allowing them to utilize the medium. Obviously, it isn't as ideal as a TV deal and AEW isn't the first to do it, but I almost wonder if in the future we will see more use of you youtube by bigger companies for original cannon or pseudo-canon shows. Just thinking out loud a bit.
Maybe not the wwe... they are already just a contend production compnay.

I really like the idea of Dark serving as a way to pad records while also acting as a sort of "developmental" or "try-out" for unsigned talents. It also helps prepare folks who may not be 100% Dynamite-ready.
For the women's tournament, I wish most of this was on Dynamite when you consider they only have one women's match per show and this week is going to have stuff like Brandon Cutler vs. Jake Hager. I understand the Japan bracket being on Youtube considering the low production value and minimalist setting, but more U.S. matches should be on Dynamite.

I agree on the women's tournament, but watching something like Conti vs Rose I understood why. The pressure is lower. They let Conti and Rose sort of go all out for a mini banger in a way that they may not have had time for on Dynamite, or may not have trusted them fully yet, especially on a live dynamite. It lets them really flex what they can do with lower stakes.
I'm starting to see more character work, more trust, and (I hope) more feuds spinning out of this tournament. I think AEW has heard the complaints about lack of women's wrestling and they are working to get there without throwing people in the deep end.
I'm also completely convinced that Taz and Ex are the best commentary team in wrestling right now. I'm not sure it is close.

Excalibur was really good calling it on his own but Taz did a great with him yesterday. They honestly should just bump J.R. from commentary and have Taz replace him permanently (occasionally stepping away for manager angles).

I couldn't agree more. He has his moments, but for the most part he has adopted a style/approach to this product that drives me nuts.

AEW is promising a huge signing at Revolution. Who could it possibly be? I've seen quite a few names bandied about, but I think most of them can be ruled out for one reason or another. Let's play Guess Who. They're promising the signing of a Hall of Fame- worthy talent, which strongly implies that they're not members of any Hall of Fame of note. After all, if it was a legit Hall of Famer, why wouldn't they just say so? That seems to rule out guys like Angle, Cena, and Lesnar. They also said "It's not who you think." That would seem to rule out Punk. Tony called the signee "he" on the AEW Uncensored podcast, which obviously rules out Rousey. He also described the the signee as a "major, huge, huge star in the world of wrestling," which pretty well rules out someone like Christian as well as someone coming in from MMA or boxing.
My somewhat out-of-left-field pick? Kota Ibushi. First of all, I'm pretty sure they didn't say anything about the person being signed to AEW exclusively. Second, only a tippy-top New Japan guy would fall within the above parameters and not be a huge letdown, and almost all of them are involved in the New Japan Cup. Naito did get bounced in his first-round match, but he's part of the advertised lineup of all their upcoming shows and New Japan doesn't false advertise. Ibushi isn't part of the tournament since he's the current IWGP champion. He wouldn't be needed back in Japan until Sakura Genesis on April 4, so he could show up at Revolution and still have plenty of time to quarantine. He obviously checks all the above boxes, plus he has history with the Elite. Of course, it could end up being a giant bait and switch, but I have faith in AEW to not overpromise and underdeliver to that degree.

Yeah... this is messing with me. I'll kind of walk through some names I have seen get tossed around.
Brock - I think the chances are between slim and none, but there is no signing that could genuinely feel like a needle mover... other than maybe Brock. Plus... Brock v Kenny, Fenix, Darby... UGH, take my money.
Punk - I'll never rule this out becuase it is wrestling. The "its not who you think" makes me guess it isn't him, but that might be what they want. You see how that logic could get cyclical pretty quick. But yeah, I'd still be very up for Punk coming to AEW.
Kota - I'd be pretty surprised if this where the signing. I'd love it... but I'd be surprised. Travel for someone who can't be here for a few months at a time would be such a hassle. Plus, as NL said they didn't specify exclusive signing, but the tone made me think this was going to be an AEW guy now.
Cena - I hear this one get tossed around. I think Cena is one of the few guys who really would have that loyalty to wwe. Plus, he wants a place he can come back to for big shows with the promise of grandeur. This is one that would be a massive shock and I would probably lose my ever loving mind over it.
Shamrock - I heard this one floated and it wouldn't shock me. I think MOST people would be at ouch let down, but I'd be bang up for this.
Angle - I hope it isn't him. I don't doubt that they would use him right, but I just don't have much desire to see him in AEW. They have lots of people doing the job they would ask him to do.
Foley - There is no guarantee this is an in-ring performer. I think Foley is one of the best minds in all of werstling history and he is someone I actually would be a bit more excited to see... still not my first choice.
Ziggler - I am not sure why i keep hearing that one go around, but 1) I would hate it and 2) I can't see it happening
Batista - As much as I would love him to leave the much more lucrative career of acting in blockbuster films... I don't see it.
Aldis - Another pretty uninspiring name for me. The same principle of "not necessarily" exclusive holds here. Depending on their relationship with the NWA, Aldis could show up.
Henry - Sort of like Angle. I'd be ok with this one, a little more excited, but I'm not sure what he would bring and where he would fit.
Christian - Looks like this speculation was short lived, thankfully. Not that interesting to me.

Angle posted a hype video that a few AEW folks have retweeted. I'm becoming more convinced it is him. Or this is the best red herring ever.

It has to be a red herring. Or maybe Kurt's trying to frighten Vince into panicking and signing him to a new deal. AEW runs a really tight ship as far as keeping things from leaking out, and there's no way they'd be cool with the signing being spoiled the day before the show.

I hope you are right.
What if they hit us with a one-two punch. It is Kurt and he is added to the ladder match... but then someone like Punk or Brock comes out after or even later in the night.
Man.. i dream too big.
