Atsushi Onita vs Masashi Aoyagi (FMW - 10/6/1989)
The main event from the first ever FMW show and one of my absolute favorite Onita matches ever. I'm a fan of Karate Fighter vs Wrestler when its done well and this is an awesome twist on that archetype because Onita fights back with wild brawling. Aoyagi just blitzes Onita with crazy kicks bloodying him up which leads to Onita FIGHTING back. I love these wild Onita brawls more than his death match stuff and this is one of the best. Great match.

I think me and Elliott have very different tastes. I don't think this is very good. They didn't do a great job of working within the round system, the end of every round just feels like a weird interruption. Wouldn't agree that this is a 'wild brawl' really, Onita is in some ways at his least brawliest, employing headlocks and a half crab and no closed fists. This isn't the wrestlers' fault but watching the handheld doesn't give a great feel for what exactly is going on. The match ends with 5 straight minutes of Onita getting knocked down, beating a ten count, getting knocked down again until a towel is thrown in.
Seconded.

Third. Really good match thanks to Onita's heel work and the invested crowd. But it wasn't as great as I hoped/expected it to be. I thought Onita fought back with both some desperate brawling and some basic wrestling holds, which was interesting.

Been on an Onita rewatch and this really held up well for me. Onita out of his depth against this karate guy, and a sense that things could fall apart at any moment. This and the rematch 4 days later made for a very satisfying hour of wrestling.
