I think ROH in 2007 and 2008 had some good stuff, 2002 and 2003 aren't as good so I think you're right.

I think ROH in 2007 and 2008 had some good stuff, 2002 and 2003 aren't as good so I think you're right. I know some folks really love early ROH. It wasn’t my thing at the time. And especially the earliest stuff I’ve never revisited. 04-10 is when I was active and going to shows 07 & 08 have some of my favorite stuff the company ever did.

The very earliest days of ROH have a lot some real bright spots, but watching shows start to finish could be rougher. It hit its stride as a more well rounded and filled out show in 2004ish; I agree.

1999-2000 AJPW smokes most years on there. 2000 is a weird deal with them losing their TV deal halfway through, but it still produced multiple MOTDC-tier matches and a shocking amount of great ones. The 2001-2004 period also seems underrated, though I haven't seen enough to say for sure if it belongs on there. The Muto ProWres love bullshit hadn't yet gotten out of control and there were a lot of great and unique matchups with Kawada/Fuchi/Tenryu featured prominently.
There's been enough gems found from 2001 NOAH that the "NOAH didn't get going until Kobashi's return" viewpoint doesn't really hold up. I'd stretch it back to 2000.
Seems like most RINGS fans think the promotion's greatness goes back to 1992 or 1993. 1996-1999 was when the promotion produced its #1 match ever candidates, but that's an absurd standard to expect and those early shows have loads of great matches, plus you get some extra context on how the promotion and style developed.
Could be that the DVDVR 80's set had some key omissions from 1985 NJPW (Inoki/Fujinami and the good Inoki/Brody match), but my impression from the set was that 1985 was a massive step down from the surrounding years due to the UWF and Choshu exoduses. Probably worse than 1987 AJPW. I loved 1980-1981, though.
1984-1985 UWF should be on there. A very important run from a historical perspective with numerous all-timers and gems.
2009 BJW was an underrated run that produced several matches that have been favorites for me to revisit over the years. Haven't seen enough to say much about the promotion's other years, but I think that at least deserves a shout-out. Deathmatch seems very underrepresented.

I agree that RINGS in its entirety is worth watching. 1996-1999 is especially interesting if you want to see the evolution of the RINGS house style reach its peak and the work-shoot spectrum in all its glory, but all of it from 1991-1999 should be watched.

Will second AEW in 2021. Just mind-boggling how many classics came out of that year.

I haven't seen enough of 1978 & 1979, but I would say 1977 WWWF is an awesome year and then 1980-1989 WWF is a great run & worthy of inclusion. Yes, the whole decade. 1977-1983 AJPW as well. 89-95 FMW 86-89 WWC

If you're a fan of grumpy, lumpy, dumpy folk whomping each other all over the place - as we all should be - then WAR from 92-94 is worth mentioning here. There was a lot of crossover with New Japan those years as well as the Heisei Ishingun stuff. Basically every card had something quality on it.

Fu-Ten 2009-2012 is the greatest wrestling I've ever seen. ARSION for the first year had great wrestling and was also extremely well booked. IWA Japan in 1998 was insanely fun. There is only a handful of shows on tape, but Pro Wrestling DREAMERS was also amazing with lots of gems. JWP 1990-1991 I have a soft spot for. World of Sport in 1980. DDT 1999-2000 looks awesome.
