Riki Choshu & Masa Saito vs George Takano & Super Strong Machine (NJPW - 3/16/1989)
One of the coolest matches ever. Hard to call it underrated when it finished 12th overall on the DVDVR 80s New Japan set voting while receiving a #1 vote (I think from DEAN) and several top 5 votes. But did anyone ever talk about it before that set came out? Has anyone talked about it since? This is an awesome match. It is going along like a normal tag match before Takano gets in a little too much offense against Choshu & Saito leading to them deciding to remove all of the blood from Takano's body. They just fucking kill this poor guy and turn into the scariest Midnight Express ever cutting off the ring and building to a hot tag. Machine is awesome in this laying in some fucking nasty lariats and destroying Saito's world with a top rope knee to a standing Saito on the floor. This is such an awesome match. Not a lock for my list, but it absolutely has a shot.

SSM and Takano are the underdogs. Choshu and Saito are clearly the dominant team. They play the viliains and use dirty tactics all along. Takano really gets his ass kicked and finishes by wearing crimson mask. Finally, he's able to make the hot tag. The underdogs win by count out but it feels like a big win anyway. And the win the titles ! It's an upset. I've appreciated Choshu and Saito losing with dignity and congragulating their opponents. Choshu even puts the belt around one of them's waist ! I agree it was an outstanding bout between the strong heel team and the underdog babyface one. I'm really glad I'm not the only one to have appreciated it.

DId whoever requested this match for the google drive end up watching it? If so, what do you think? I need to revisit this one. Last time I watched it I remember being a little underwhelmed by the first half and then absolutely blown away by the 2nd.

Watched it again. It was awesome. Even the first part I was previously underwhelmed by. This is so fucking good.. Riki Choshu & Masa Saito are like the worlds greatest version of Arn & Tully. WOuld strongly recommend.

I'm the one who requested it, and I did watch it. I was mainly interested in seeing the opening portion of the match because the version on Ditch's website has that part clipped out. Having seen it in full, I understand why. At first, I thought it was perfectly acceptable early feeling out. But then it just kept going on and on until I was begging them to get on with it already. That part didn't drag as much for me on a recent reviewing, but it still would've been better if had lasted about five minutes rather than close to ten. Of course, things pick up once Takano gets busted open. Takano's selling and the tandem offense from Choshu and Saito were both great, but it made me realize the importance of hope spots in tag matches. If the FIP is just being beaten down without things like tag cut-offs and partner saves to break it up, I'm going to lose interest after a while. The closing stretch was the best part of the match. I loved Takano's desperate dive to break up a pin as well as his plancha to nowhere. Good match overall. No shot at my list, but I'm glad I was able to see it in its entirety.

Its definitely a case of "First Half: Oh this is a good match, not sure why people like it so much....2nd Half: Ohhhhh, this is why."
