Disclaimer, I don't think this is the actual date because Cagematch says its the Mid-South Coliseum and I have a feeling this is actually their match on the 12th of April because of the lack of mention of the 10 lashes stipulation and the venue looks very different and resembles other matches held in Lexington. But until that's proven, let's assume it is the Coliseum.
The beginning of the match is a lot of cagey wrestling. But when they lock up, they go for it. Lawler snatches Savage’s arm and locks in a tight wrist lock and works on it with tons of intensity to it. Savage’s selling is great in these moments too. Then they go into a sequence straight out of New Japan technical bouts with a headscissors escape attempt by Savage. Unexpected but very welcome. On the outside Jimmy Hart claims Lawler pulled the hair. Savage has to pull Lawler out on the floor to gain an advantage. He couldn’t even out wrestle Lawler so he had to get violent. I love Savage’s outside spots. When he goes to the floor, it seems dangerous. They’ve put it over well in the other matches I’ve seen of him and it seems like his element. Lawler throws some amazing punches but then Savage throws some even better ones (!!!) and they go back to the floor, transitioning the closing stretch. Classic Lawler from here: great punching sequences, great false finishes with Angelo Poffo interfering and a great finish with a raucous response. Gaahhhh. Great match ****1/4
