Jumbo Tsuruta and Genichiro Tenryu vs Riki Choshu and Yoshiaki Yatsu (NWA International Tag Team Titles – AJPW – 1/28/1986) The height of the Choshu’s Army invades All Japan era and my pick for the best Japanese vs Japanese tag match ever. This has incredible drama and storytelling with everyone hitting their roles just right. This is fast paced with a bonkers crowd, tons of emotion, hot moves and just everything you could want from a big time heavyweight tag match. Holds up remarkably well for a match that is 30+ years old. If I ranked purely on favorites, this would rank in my top 10. It will be in my top 25 for this list.

Second; this rocks. Just four workers being badass, with great action and pace, and incredible crowd. Choshu's performance in this is awesome.
Don't know where it's going to rank (probably top 75-10, I guess), but I'm sure it's going to make my list. I hope so.

Third. Probably in my top 10. Storytelling? Check! Character Work? Check! Action and violence? Check! Anger, hatred, and emotion? Check! Hot Crowd? Check! Influential? Check! Exciting? Check!

One of the best tag matches of the decade. Just non-stop action with intensity, violence, blood, psychology and selling. Incredible amount of hate too. My favorite spot is where Jumbo is seconds away from being beaten but Tenryu is more concerned with beating the fuck out of Choshu at ringside than saving the match.

This match is in my preliminary top ten. I could write an essay about why I have it so highly ranked but for now I'll just leave my preliminary ranking to speak for itself.

Since I started watching wrestling again, tags have become my favourite type of match. This is probably going to make my top ten

Rewatched this for the first time in a while and it is fantastic, holds up well and is a lock for my list.

Such a fucking awesome match. Check out the one from 2/5/86 while this one is fresh. Finished 19th in the DVDVR 80s AJPW vote

This is wild. I just rewatched this over the weekend and will do a quick write up soon. Short version, I still love the match, but I think it might fall off my list.

It’s probably not controversial to say that Yatsu is the least regarded of these four guys as everyone else is guaranteed to finish well in GWE. But in this match Yatsu is up there with all of them. I prefer him in NJPW generally but this is probably his best performance. There is so much hate between the teams in this match and it embodies the Choshu invasion on AJPW. Choshu fights through an injury and we see the further emergence of Grumpo Tsuruta while Tenryu is emerging as a GOAT candidate on his own. One of the better tag matches you’ll ever see.
