One of the best WoS matches, ever. My pick for 1981 MOTY. There is something about two technicians in black trunks having a go that might not exactly send people raving in excitement, but this is something else. Super heated match with Cortez playing subtle heel, lots of awesome ultra tight pop his arm out of his arm submission work, and just general hair on your neck standing up intensity. A desert island choice for me.

I love this one as well, and it's another likely choice for my top 100. The skill was there, of course, but the nastiness set it apart. Every little torque of the body felt essential.

Like pretty much every single Jon Cortez match i've watched this is good but not great to me. Good technical stuff here, and it escalates as time goes on to something more and more aggressive. I don't like the finish at all.

I really liked this one a lot. I haven't watched it since my initial dive into the classic British style, but this one definitely stood out. It didn't quite make serious consideration last time around, but I may give it another look. Grey is my boy, and Cortez added some teeth to this I think. Really good.

I have been watching a good bit of Grey and I have been very impressed; this match was a cut above many of the others I have seen. Sometimes Grey works some humor into his matches but he was serious here in a way that told you he wanted the win badly. The early matwork was engaging and Grey is always looking for a way out. When he landed the dropkick O liked the sell by Cortez, he really put over the move. More and more intensity followed, they just checked all the boxes in one of the better WoS matches I’ve seen.

This was tremendous. The match had a real sense of struggle, particularly Cortez. It's not exactly uncooperative but both guys look like they were genuinely trying to win. There were a few points here where it looked as if it might go off, Cortez getting livid when shots were thrown.
This and the Kilby/Ben match from 81 are the closest I've seen WoS matches come to looking like a legitimate sporting competition and I love it.

Watched it. I get the appeal but it doesn't appeal to me. Great for what they're going for no doubt.

I had this as #83 on my ballot this year.
A babyface vs babyface WOS match that dispenses with the usual gentlemanly, cordial atmosphere. This is full of chippiness, with tempers constantly on the boil.
The match is for a world title shot and neither competitor is messing around. Cortez works subtle heel, wrenching Grey's arms in ways arms were never intended to be wrenched, and taking exception to Grey landing a (legal) forearm shot to escape a hold. Grey works from underneath, making comebacks in fiery bursts.
The only downside is the cheap, caught-in-ropes finish, which comes pretty much out of nowhere. Though even that is redeemed slightly by the aftermath. Normally WOS babyfaces refused to accept wins that way and the bouts would be ruled no contests. No thank you says Cortez, he's taking the title shot.
