How has this match not been nominated. For shame.
In the immortal words of Ditch: "Funaki is good-looking and ultra-talented. Nakano is a slab of flesh. Funaki has cool-guy hair, Nakano looks like he got a trim from his blind mother. Also they hate each other with the intensity of a million exploding suns."
Ultra heated fast paced shootstyle brawl in front of a molten crowd. They just go ham on eachother, kicks to the face, stomps on the head, palm strikes and headbutts thrown with bad intent. Nakano's nose explodes and the doctor checks on him, to which Nakano raises his fist and sprays the blood out of his face, indicating he is going to kick Funaki's ASS, and the crowd explodes again. Funaki gets him to the ground, but soon Nakano gets up and immediately to knocking Funaki's brains out. Funaki bumps all exaggerated like Mr. Perfect. More assbeating and some fun improbable big moves ensue.
I dunno. This is such a stark contrast to the slow paced brainy Fujiwara/Yamazaki match from the same event. It may be the ultimate test of your pro wrestling tastes to figure out which you prefer. Amazing unforgettable match, anyways.

Oh hell yeah I will second this one. Imagine being in the crowd that night and seeing this and Fujiwara vs Yamazaki live.
This match is not just stiff. It is nasty. It is vicious. Ishikawa and Ikeda, when they watch this match, cringe and say, "Dude! Take it easy in there." I absolutely would have believed this was a shoot in 1989.
It is SO fast-paced and violent and the hardway blood is just crazy.
Best sub-10-minute shoot style sprint ever? Probably!

This rules obviously. Off the charts intensity and aggression, classic underdog story, Tatsuo getting his face busted, great heel work by Funaki, great crowd.

That was, like, the WM17 or the Bash '89 of Shoot Style cards!

Right now, before I've put in any concerted work to ranking things, this is my number two or number three. You take one glance at this match and you say Nakano couldn't win this if he had a gun and Funaki was blindfolded, and that's before Funaki kicks his face inside out. Watching him struggle and make the comeback is so gripping and so gratifying. With the Black/Cole brawl last night my friends and I were talking about the best usages of stoppages in wrestling and this was the first thing that came to mind.

Easy top 30 choice for me, as I have it at ***** and as my #7 best match of the 80s. I need to rewatch some RINGS and BattlARTS classics, but right now this is my favourite shoot style match ever.

This will be on the borderline for me, one of the best shoot-style matches I have ever seen. Wicked exciting, blood galore and crazy intensity.
Masakatsu Funaki vs Tatsuo Nakano - UWF II 7/24/89
Funaki should have been a massive star in puroresu in the 90s. Funaki vs Tenryu, Funaki vs Takada, and Funaki vs Hashimoto should have been huge draws.
Holy shit! What a match, I thought the Anjoh match was great, but this was superb. Balls to the wall for ten insane minutes. It is just a wild shoot style brawl. Nakano is a huge favorite. The crowd is red hot and they are chanting for Nakano throughout. The first three minutes are brutal and electric. Funaki explodes Nakano's face with palm strikes. Funaki gets cut right under the eye by a vicious knee and it looks like he is crying blood. It is unconformable. Funaki gets spiked on his head because he refuses to go over a take down at one point. The trainer has to tend to Nakano. Nakano is the first one to score a knockdown as he escapes a leg lace and blasts Funaki in the head with a kick. Funaki is one of the best shoot-style sellers I have ever seen. He comes up woozy. Who knows if he was selling? Funaki's matches always incorporate really cool organic throws. I love him not letting Nakano complete a Dragon Leg Screw and just stomping on his head. Yes! Yes! Yes! Pro wrestling needs more of this. Pro wrestling should not be easy. Funaki gets a wild spinkick that pops me and then a back drop driver for his first knockdown. That spinkick would make Kawada jealous. He nailed it. Nakano is a bloody mess in the single leg crab. Nakano is kind of a humpty-dumpty looking muthafucka. Trainer is back in. Nakano says he is ready for more punishment. This has been a war. I could see Inoki absolutely loving this. This is Inokiism at its finest. Funaki attacks the knees once the trainer leaves. Nakano thrust kick creates separation and then a roundhouse kick to the head downs Funaki. Wicked suplex/DDT from Nakano. Funaki EXPLODES~! Palm strikes, headbutts and in his furious flurry he leaves himself open for Nakano counterattack who pops him with a knee. This is an insane ending just a wild brawl. Nakano throws a snap German Suplex into a Single Leg Crab and Funaki writhes out. Funaki picks Nakano up and just does a wicked Somersault Alabama Slam! WOW! DEEP BOSTON CRAB! Liontamer-esque and Nakano has to tap out. WOW! I am speechless. A shoot-style brawl that just delivers in spades. ****3/4

I just rewatched this. Haven't seen it since I started digging into shoot like 3 years ago maybe. I was low on this. This is a legit contender for best sub-10 minute match. Absolute electricity.

Re-watched this last night for the first time in ages. I've soured a bit on shoot-style over the years but this, what an absolute banger. There's an intensity and nastiness to it that's rare which really puts it above the other stuff from that style.

I just noticed this has never been voted into the Top 100. I hope we can right this wrong in 2023

Agree, this is great stuff, I will rewatch again before I submit but expect it to be comfortably on my list.

I just noticed this has never been voted into the Top 100. I hope we can right this wrong in 2023 How? It's a hard-hitting match in which the crowd is nuts, the best match I've seen that didn't pass the 10 minute mark. A top 40 match of all time, top 5 of 1989.

I think it’s gonna go in my Top 20. I did not vote for it last time.

Basically as exciting as pro-wrestling can get. Even if you don't like shootstyle, you MUST watch this.
