Stan Hansen vs Carlos Colon (Bullrope - WWC - 1/6/1987)
While some among us prefer the cage match, I am all in on this bullrope match as the epitome of the feud and the feud is one of the finest in ring feuds in all of wrestling. The thing is, I generally don't like bullrope matches, or any match where wrestler shave to touch the corners to win. However, this is done so beautifully. The stipulation that usually has me rolling my eyes has them glued to the screen here. I have written this elsewhere when I first watched it like 4 years ago, the moment when Hansen gets stopped from getting to the corner and falls to his knees almost crying is one of those wrestling moments that just sticks in my mind. It is such a brilliant little piece of business that I think reflects how well everything is built in this one. I can't imagine this not being in the top 20 or 30 at worst.

I second this nomination. All time classic match. Yes, I prefer the Cage match overall, but this is still a top 50 lock and the best touch four corners with wrestlers attached to each other match. I'll probably end up watching this whole feud again for the purposes of this project because in addition to this and the Cage match, I will probably rank the February match as well.

Not sure if this is my favorite of the feud either, but that's really like deciding if you prefer steak or prime rib. The entire feud was amazing and this match was just as violent and bloody as the others. Even more impressive considering there aren't a ton of classic bullrope matches.

This is already through, but if I were doing a ballot, and doing one today (and realistically if I do a ballot I'm likely to throw it together based on stuff I've already seen with a handful of exceptions) this could very well be my highest rated singles match and would absolutely make my top ten.

I'd expect to have this and the cage match in my top 100.

I rewatched this recently along with three other matches as part of what I plan to be a semi-regular thing for me. I am grouping matches and comparing and contrasting them. For this session I watched: Sangre Chicana vs MS-1 (Hair vs Hair – 9/23/1983) Shinobu Kandori vs Akira Hokuto (4/2/1993) Stan Hansen vs Carlos Colon (Texas Bullrope Match – 1/6/1987) John Cena vs Umaga (Last Man Standing – WWE Title – 1/28/2007) You can find my entire post on all four here: gweproject.freeforums.net/post/2387Most of my analysis is grouped by qualities of the matches, but here were my final thoughts on this match. Stan Hansen vs Carlos Colon (Texas Bullrope Match – 1/6/1987)Current Rank: 5 Trending: Even I dug into this feud around the time I joined the PWO boards (around the summer of 2015) when I was also digging into wrestling on the whole a little more deeply, getting into the 70s and especially the 80s, back into indy wrestling, and into promotions that had historically been blind spots to me. I believe I posted something then about how much I loved this match over on PWO and nothing has changed since that then. This is peak Hansen dropped into the frenzy of 80s wrestling in Puerto Rico. Its both fun and masterful all at once. It is everything I want in my wrestling and more, despite the fact that I am generally not a fan of strap matches with the corner finish. It's a perfect combination of chaos, violence, and pro wrestling cheese. I have seen the criticism by Matt D – a rightful one I think – of Hansen that he is only giving to certain people and has a tendency to gobble some guys up. That may be true, but it makes it so much more meaningful when he does give. This one would probably be hard pressed to break the top 2, but I would be surprised if it was outside the top 10 when the dust settles.

This might just be my favourite Hansen match, but then I say that about a bucketload of others. Could make my top ten.

I rewatched this and it is even better than I remembered. So much action upfront and great selling throughout and drama at the end. I have this above the cage match and can see it in the top 10. The best of its kind.

This match fell substantially for me before the first ballot, but it is still a lock for my top 100. Such a great match.

I’m curious, did it fall because of some of the other things you watched bumping it downward or were there flaws in this match that you noticed or bothered you more? Top 100 is nothing to sneeze at of course, just curious about the story behind the drop.

I think it was a combination of other things bumping it down and me just cooling every so slightly on rewatch. The first time I watched it I was convinced it was a #1 contender. It is still a 5 star classic, it is just on like tier two for me. I have it at #34 now, so maybe the word "substantially" was a bit harsh. I had it as high as #5 at one point

What a battle. This is to “touch the four corners’” matches what Bret vs Owen is to escape-the-cage matches. The gimmick isn’t limiting, it’s how you make use of it. They had a long brawl that interspersed sections of trying to touch the corners. The last section of the match had duelling battles over this with Colon getting a dramatic win. These guys are epic opponents for each other.

I had this at #30 last time around. I just watched it and had a super blast with it. I will try to get it a few spots higher. This has always been my favorite match of the feud. Great use of the stipulation.

Are people fans of the 11/9/86 match?

I love the 11/9/86 match. One of the best sub-10 minute matches ever. 80s Puerto Rico was just the best
