Terry and Dory Funk Jr vs Abdullah the Butcher & The Sheik (Real World Tag League Finals - AJPW - 12/15/77
The first legendary match between these two teams. This is the match that began the Legend of Terry Funk in All Japan. The beating he takes at the hands of Abby & The Sheik turns Terry Funk from a well liked and respected Gaijin into one of the most beloved babyfaces in the history of Japanese Wrestling. This is not only a truly historic match, but easily one of the greatest matches in the history of wrestling. Heat, atmosphere and work all blending together to one of the best matches ever.

This is known for the great Funk performance, but the Sheik puts in a performance that stands out from my point of view. I remember watching vhs tapes as a kid and the Sheik seemed so over the top. Here is seems like a more of a filthy opportunistic scumbag. The carving up of Funk’s arm is nasty and makes his effort to get back at the heels all the more memorable.

Terry is unbelievable in this match. On the shortlist of greatest individual performances ever. I will definitely third this match.

Today is my birthday so if you read this you should watch this or any of these 4 matches. 7/79 is the best match they have together but this is the most important one.

Bumping this because I think it's insanely underrated. The 7/79 match made our first two top 100s but not the most recent one. And this has never placed but that's a goddamn travesty. I have it penciled into the top 20 just not sure where exactly. If Dump Matsumoto never existed, I'd think about this for #1.

Going to watch all the matches of this series in a row. An awesome one to start off. A great match to watch on Halloween Eve as not only is there gore with the vicious attack on Terry's arm, but this whole match just feels like a freakshow in the best way, the otherwordly Abdullah, the Sheik with his curly boots, and two Texas cowboys going to town on each other with forks while Japanese salarymen lose their shit. Just incredible chaotic feel and atmosphere for the whole match. Dory snatching the fork out of mid-air for his comeback and the guys in the audience right in the shot standing up and swinging their fists in response is an all-time moment. As is Terry's arm getting taped up and his fiery comeback; I especially love the moment where Terry has both Abdullah and the Sheik cowering in the corner as he rains punches on them. The DQ definitely leaves me wanting more. I could for sure see this in the lower half of my top 100, and wouldn't bat an eye on anyone putting this however high they wanted.

I would definitely encourage watching the Terry vs Abdullah singles matches from this era and then there's a pair of Abdullah vs Sheik matches from 1980 AJPW that's a nice cap to this story.
