Carlos Colon vs Hercules Ayala (Fire Match - WWC - 09/10/1988) This is one of the most amazing spectacles ever. The visuals from the fire make this an unbelievable scene. I will always prefer fire to barbed wire just because the fire looks so cool. Carlos Colon is a completely insane person just reaching out and sticking his hand in the fire multiple times. The match itself is really good too I think. Just a straight up brawl with them punching each other in the face and trying to set each other on fire. I LOVE that at some point Ayala abandons this strategy and starts going after Carlos’ leg nonstop so he can get the figure 4. So Carlos is like “YOU WANNA SEE A FIGURE 4?” That’s right, dueling leg work in a fire match but it fucking fits. This was way better than I even expected and I expected to like this. Loved it.

Hercules Ayala is absolutely pelted with rubbish as he comes to the ring and some after the match starts, even using a can thrown at him as a weapon. Loved the crazy visual of the fire in the early stages of the match. The fire dying down as the match goes on and the guys going to wrestling instead of trying to set eachother on fire feels like a de-escalation to me. Elliot talking about dueling leg work got me hopeful about what this be but that aspect of the match wasn't great to me. Hercules works the leg, applies a figure four Colon reverses the figure four and from this point forward Carlos neither sells his leg or takes a single offensive move to the leg.
***1/4 Seconded

I'm going to third this but I think it's my third favorite Ayala v. Colon match. Still this has some tremendous visuals and it's kind of a genius way to work a death match in that it is all about the image it evokes and less about the explicit danger. Guys tapping flames probably isn't exactly safe, but this was sort of the ultimate work in that it was probably safer than most bump heavy matches, but it had an aura of horror around it all times, perfectly milked by the two of them for maximum effect.

Rewatched this because who isn't thinking about breathing in smoke these days and my god. For a match I've voted for in the past and pimped for years, this is even better than I remembered.

Man this is incredible. There really isn't anything better than great wrestling in Puerto Rico.

This feud is a blind spot for me going in. The atmosphere feels all time - the airhorns, the rubbish, the FIRE - whereas the work felt good but not great. I have a feeling I love Carlos Colon's comebacks though.
