1 fall Career vs. Career match.
I didn't expect to see a solid Match of the Decade contender at this point, but this was it. Just an incredible match, if CMLL did this kind of story based intense pro wrestling more often there would be no stopping the company. The psychology was sharp as a knife, early Virus working over Metalico with shots to the head followed by a control switching dive sequence felt straight out of 90s AJPW. The struggle and nearfall sequences where top tier and as good as it gets in lucha. I realize I'm sounding a little generic here, but they worked so many fine details into the back and forth, combined with a determined Metalico giving it all to take down the trickiest wrestler in the world. I haven't seen as much Metalico as I probably should have but he was great here as the aging gunslinger who would throw fists and fight tooth and nail. Even his sloppiness added to the match. Virus was as classy as usual. Every counter was incredibly well executed and perfectly timed, with some great struggle over holds and pins thrown in. Loved the constant punch outs which gave the match a feel like somebody would have to be KOd for it to end. Gotta love the fact they made suicide dive feel this epic in 2019.

I am not quite as high on this as Jetlag, but it is still a really really great match. What they lacked physically they made up for with storytelling here. This was really well put together and every submission and near fall felt exponentially more important than the last. Really top stuff on the whole.
I think the thing that keeps me a bit more reserved on this is the physical limitations. I genuinely don' mean that as an insult. They are top notch wrestlers out there putting on on the line, but they are 49 and 50 years old. Its massively impressive what they accomplished here (especially juxtaposed to another clash of 50 year olds we have seen lately) and I agree that some of the sloppiness can actually add to matches like this, they took me out of it just a touch in places (and I say that as a completely nit-picky point unique to this forum really).
Still, this is great stuff. Get on the youtube and check this out.

Almost missed out on this one, glad I found it cause it was really great and has a solid chance of making my top 100. I think Virus might be my favorite luchador, never seen a bad match with him.
While their athleticism is not overly impressive because of their age, their grace is. The moves they do look real clean and swift. Virus hitting a bolo punch was great. I wish the punches looked more convincing though if they were going to do that many "mano y mano" spots where they're hitting each other.
I did become numb to all the near falls, but Virus looped the crowd back in toward the end.

Have never heard of Metálico. And honestly, he didn't look that great in this match, but he put in a ton of effort (given lose must retire stipulation). He put in his heart and soul to win and that's all that matters. I really liked his short punches that caught Virus on the chin. He had some cool moves and was able to play off Virus so well. Virus was so great in this though. He brought the heat and urgency to the match with his big moves and submissions to put Metálico away. The crowd was hot for the drama of the match. Even stamping their feet like they were in the Nippon Budokan. Outstanding match. Classic. ****1/2

Caveat to the below, I have watched very little modern lucha in general, Metalico in particular. If my read on the match seems off, you know why.
I thought this was a bonafide MOTDC. I think we all agree that Virus is a master at getting the most out of limited opponents, nothing more needs saying about that. It’s Metalico that’s the star here. As an unremarkable, washed-up schlub determined to leave his mark, I thought he gave a surprisingly endearing performance that worked on several levels and was 1000% better because legitimately he’s… middling at best? Going up against Virus, both in terms of kayfabe and in terms of actual ability, he’s a man totally out of his depth. He’s a guy with tattoos that were fashionable 20 years ago, a receding hairline and whose best days are gone. But dammit everyone knows this is his last match so it’s now or never to hit that tope. Honestly the pathos of this aged guy coming up against his own physical and professional limitations was quite profound in a way wrestling very rarely manages.
