First and foremost, we need more names like Japanese tag team names in wrestling. They are just the best. This might be the greatest team ever if you are just looking at high end matches. Taua and Kawada were great together. One man is a big craky bully and the other has a little man complex. Fantastic pairing.

My favorite tag team of all time. Two of the greatest singles wrestlers of all time. Have been part of the greatest tag team matches of all time. It only makes sense that two guys who hated each others' guts and wouldn't waste a single opportunity to inflict pain on the other would realize "Hey, wouldn't we make a great tag team?"
I wish I could say more about why they're the best tag team ever but I've seen so little of teams like the Midnight and Rn'R Expresses that I want to keep an open mind.

What are people's favorite match excluding vs Misawa & Partner X?

That's a surprisingly difficult question. I'd go with the KENTA/Akiyama match from the Misawa tribute show or the Bossman/Williams match from the 1993 RWTL.

Can you really be the best team ever if basically all your great matches are against 1 & 1/2 teams?

The Misawa matches aren't just great, they're superlative. I had three HDA matches in my top 20, two of which were in my top 10. Granted, you won't find that argument particularly compelling if you don't view 6/9/95 and 12/6/96 on that level. But it's not like their matches against other teams were chopped liver. Can anyone point to an actively bad HDA match? I think that aspect of their careers is more unexplored than anything. In fact, this conversation has inspired me to do a deep dive into HDA matches against non-Misawa teams. Look for it soon on PWO.

The Hayabusa & Shinzaki tag from 98 or 99 I remember being really good.

I think this is why I wouldn't call them the best or my favorite, but did put them in the conversation with the caveat of a focus on high end matches. Personally, I prefer the 80s and 90s US style teams where they are a collective gimmick and sort of dedicate themselves for longer periods to tag wrestling. This brings in a lot more than just the high end matches/performances.
However, for a project like this HDA is just going to shine and in this context they are tough to deny in a way. They wind up being subject to the same criticism all high end 90s AJPW is more or less subject to (limited opponents, all talented opponents, etc). I think its totally valid if judging a career, depending on personal tastes and how each individual judges, but they are always going to have strong representation on a greatest match ever list and that has to put them in the broader conversation I think (even if its qualified)

The Hayabusa & Shinzaki tag from 98 or 99 I remember being really good. 1997, actually.
Two more high-end HDA matches against non-Misawa teams: 5/14/93 vs. Kobashi/Kikuchi 10/11/98 vs. Burning
Neither of them have a shot at my top 100, but they're both better than all but a handful of Midnight Express matches.
