The more I think and watch (and rewatch) about Liger, the more I like him. I've always loved him and considered, idk, a top 30 guy or something like that. A tier but not S tier. One of the greatest of all time but not a contender for greatest wrestler of all time. That kind of guy.
But these last months, damn, think about it. This guy debuted in 1984 with nineteen years old. He was having great singles and multitag performances one and two years later. He had the Sano and Samurai matches in his MID-TWENTYS. That's HUGE. And I'd argue that's not even Liger at his peak yet. Serious 90s WOTD contender. That alone makes a case for a top 15-20 kind of guy, but I've loved his 10s work against guys like KUSHIDA, Ishimori, Breeze, Taichi, Suzuki, his retirement matches are pretty fun too. And I don't remember quite well the small amount of his 00s work I've seen, so I still need to look deeply into that, but I know the Kikuchi series and the NOAH stuff in general has to be great. Three and a half decades of being pretty solid, great and/or at BITW level.
And I didn't mention his elite level at offense, selling, pacing Jr matches and his character work, but he was obviously amazing at all those things. That's why he was so good for so long, I guess. Clearly a #1 contender for me now. It's crazy, honestly.

I think Loss used to bring up how amazing it was that Liger could be so emotive while wearing a full body suit and mask. He's definitely one of the great talents (and hardest workers) of all time. Wouldn't be my #1 but he's someone I wouldn't argue with being ranked at the top. One of the best results of GWE was Liger landing at #6.

Yeah... liger is in the conversation. My list of "people I wouldn't bat an eye at seeing #1" is maybe a little longer than some, but he is firmly on it. Longevity, variety, presence, in ring ability, well roundedness, influence, top end matches... He sort of excels just about everywhere. I think if I submitted a list somewhere he would wind up in the top 10-15, at worst.

He's one of the few who retired before he completely broke down. He was still a really good wrestler.

I'll never tire of watching Liger, think I'll set aside some time to go on a binge soon.
