When I first joined online wrestling fan circles, Andre had about as bad a reputation as a worker as anyone you can think of. The way people talk about Bruiser Brody, Big Daddy, and Stevie Ray was how people talked about Andre. You'd hear the same "He was better in Japan" line you'd hear about Hogan, but even that was often qualified was the suggestion that he was still bad.
Of course as more footage came out of younger pre Hogan era WWF, the worm turned on Andre to the point where he managed to finish 51st in the GWE voting, right between Billy Robinson and Akira Hokuto. If we had Andre's entire career on film, I'm sure he would have about as high a variance in match quality as anyone. Even what we have is pretty remarkable in that respect. Something like Andre vs Hansen is universally beloved, but even I (a big Andre fan) have zero desire to sit through the Andre vs John Studd matches from 80s WWF.
I tend to think of the good with Andre.

I would agree. I generally think of Andre as a very good wrestler, but he wound up wrestling so much when he was physically limited with other very limited wrestlers and those matches were often the most high profile. I would actually also bring up his World title matches with Savage as really really good. He was clearly limited, but that shows what he could do with someone who could help cover those limitations and let him bring what he can bring to a match even late in his career. It helps a lot that he apparently hated Savage just mauls him a lot, but man those matches are fun.
