Abdullah marks the biggest turn around I've ever personally had on a wrestler. I went from hating him and avoiding his matches at all costs for years. "All he does is stab." Bad workrate. Limited move set. Doesn't really sell. No psychology. All the old bullshit you'd see from a typical internet "smart fan" of the late 90s & early 00s.
Now, I'd certainly include him on a GWE list and I actively look forward to seeing him in certain settings. I'm not going out of my way to look at a late 90s random Abdullah match. But 70s & 80s I'm excited about. I think the Funks vs Abdullah & Sheik matches from 77-79 are 4 of the all time best matches. I ranked all 4 of them in the top 74 during the GME vote. Terry's the star of all of the matches, but Abby is great in them and plays a major part in making them some of the best matches ever.
The Abby vs Carlos Colon rivalry was one of the great rivalries of the 80s with multiple legit great matches. Abby actually gets the shit kicked out of him and sells his ass off and each match has a different approach and structure.
He also has a bunch of really good random matches. Everyone had a good match with Terry Funk and that includes Abby. There's good stuff with Manny Fernandez, Destroyer, Tommy Rich, TNT, Dutch Mantell, Kevin Von Erich, Hogan, etc.
Abdullah is also the only wrestler other than Terry Funk that I've seen Bruiser Brody have a legit great singles match with.
In terms of character work Abby is one of the most memorable and recognizable people in the history of wrestling.
