John Cena vs Umaga ( WWE World Championship - Last Man Standing - WWE - 1/28/2007)
Holy Crap what a fun match. This is another one that just feels singular. It feels so much different than almost anything in the WWE. I wasn't a huge fan of the Umaga gimmick, but it really paid off in the ring sometimes, this was one of those times. This was on another level, fantastic violence, strong story. This brings out a huge investment from the crowd. Great Stuff.

Seconded. Was just about to nominate this actually. Yeah. One of the WWE matches that will likely make my list and one I know some people will consider ranking #1 overall. This is just an amazing Cena performance in terms of selling. The big spots are nasty. The finish is super memorable if a little uncomfortable. This is an amazing match.

This is probably the only WWE match I would hear an argument for as a Match of the decade candidate. Blood really adds a bunch to it, a ton of memorable spots, and maybe the last really great JR call. Rarely if ever did a single match turn people's opinions around on a performer as much as this did for many people.

Probably top 3 for John Cena matches. Great face vs. monster match. Had Umaga just disappeared after this I think this run would still be remembered fondly. This match really blew me away at the time as I wasn't expecting anything amazing from it.

One of the greatest WWE matches of all-time and a career performance for both men (RIP Umaga). Awesome violence that's achieved without the need for big spots and one of the most spirited babyface performances in recent memory.

Wrote about this last year for the 10th anniversary and in doing so I think I became comfortable with calling this the best WWE match ever. It's no worse than third best at the very least. Primal, unique, disgusting, whatever adjectives you want to use I think the one that fits best is unforgettable. This match is seared into my memory. If I ever fall into a huge vat of sap and become preserved for eons and aliens find my remains in the year 450,000,000 CE, they'll be able to dissect my brain and find images of this match. No way this doesn't make my top ten.

Really good match. Nice psychology around the ribs with some excellent selling by Cena. Violent and intense as well.

I rewatched this recently along with three other matches as part of what I plan to be a semi-regular thing for me. I am grouping matches and comparing and contrasting them. For this session I watched: Sangre Chicana vs MS-1 (Hair vs Hair – 9/23/1983) Shinobu Kandori vs Akira Hokuto (4/2/1993) Stan Hansen vs Carlos Colon (Texas Bullrope Match – 1/6/1987) John Cena vs Umaga (Last Man Standing – WWE Title – 1/28/2007) You can find my entire post on all four here: gweproject.freeforums.net/post/2387Most of my analysis is grouped by qualities of the matches, but here were my final thoughts on this match. John Cena vs Umaga (Last Man Standing – WWE Title – 1/28/2007)Current Rank: 47 Trending: Up I have only given 6 matches from the WWE/F full marks. Given that I haven’t yet given 100 matches the full five stars, those six matches will all make my list. Right now I believe this is the 4th of those matches. Based on that positioning with regard to other WWE matches that, Umaga/Cena might be trending up. I came away thinking this might just be the best WWE match ever. At worst, it probably belongs above at least one of its promotional kin. This accomplishes the feeling of importance, of two men truly trying to destroy one another and that isn’t always easy, particularly in the more contemporary wrestling climate. I found Umaga particularly impressive here. His timing, cutoffs, and the snap he put on his offense set the tone for this match. In turn, everything in this match felt massive, giving us a WWE match that cuts through the pack and really stands out. This was certainly the weakest of the four matches I watched this weekend, but it didn’t feel out of place next to them and that is high praise. Its tough to say where this will land at the end, but I did come away thinking very highly of this match.

This was gruesome and violence at its finest. Loved Cena's selling in this and Umaga looked like a monster here. The announce table spot was nuts and loved the finish of Cena using every ounce of energy left to choke him out.
