General movie discussion...
Anyone seen Joker yet? Holy shit, it is intense. There is a lot more to say and I don't want to spoil much, but I'll say that Phoenix is an absolute force in the movie. His performance is unsettling.

Best comic book movie since TDK for me. As good as the cinematography and script in general was, this was the type of movie where you absolutely needed the right actor to play the Joker, otherwise, the material just doesn't sound right or convincing. Given the film's subject matter about society in general, the wrong actor would have made the whole film sound like one of those "we live in a society" memes. Thankfully, they chose one of the greatest actors of this era, Joaquin Phoenix was phenomenal in this and all the Oscar talk is really well deserved. Don't think he was quite as good as Heath Ledger, but he was better than Nicholson and he has already put the abomination that was Jared Leto's Joker out of my mind.

I would co-sign basically all of that. I am not sure I would say Ledger was better, but it feels sort of like apples and oranges oddly enough to me. Ledger couldn't do this and Phoenix couldn't do what Ledger did (I don't think). However, they are both on a different level if we are ranking Jokers. Nicholson was fun, but it was never really my cup of tea.
I liked Logan a lot. I would say this is my favorite since Logan. The sentiment is similar though. I prefer the dark takes on super hero/villain stories, ones that take a slightly more serious and intellectual approach to social issues. This obviously leaned real hard into that. I don't think the more pop or fun films are void of that, but the approach is just very different.

2019 was an incredible year for movies and kinda blew up my top 100 movies ever list. Genuinely would put Once Upon a Time in Hollywood at the top now. Tarantino making a movie about 1969 Hollywood with Brad Pitt is like he made a movie just for me.
The Irishman blew me out of the fucking water. I saw it when it was early released in theaters with my dad while he was visiting, and then after he left we talked a few days later and we had both already watched it again. I was really nervous about the anti-aging CGI going in, but honestly barely noticed. If I had to list the people who made me fall in love with movies as a teenager, there would be hardly anyone I'd think of ahead of Scorcese, De Niro, Pacino & Pesci. If I was the king of Hollywood, I'd make them all retire. Perfect, beautiful way to go out. Felt like the summation of everyone's career.
1917 was the best War movie since Dunkirk and I figured was going to win all of the Oscars. Its something I want to watch again because the first time around is just such a mindblowing big screen experience.
Speaking of the oscars, for all the handwrigingin leading up to the show and all the (predictable) anger surrounding Joker getting all sorts of nominations, the biggest tragedy of all was how overlooked Us was. If I could only have 5 filmmakers going forward, Jordan Peele is one of them. Lupita Nyong'o should have been nominated for best actress twice in the same movie.
Uncut Gems answers the questions: Can you hold your breath for two hours and what does it soundlike when an entire theater exhales after holding their breath for two hours. I can't remember the last time I was excited about an Adam Sandler movie? Big Daddy? So I thought the whole "HE DESERVES TO BE HONORED" hullabaloo was weird. Its not like he's Leo before the Revenant. He's made like 30 movies and maybe 5 of them are good? That said. He was perfect and he deserved to win for that performance. To bad he ran into the Joaquin Phoenix buzzsaw.
With all that said Parasite winning was awesome. "Second to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" is extraordinarily high praise. There's a theater around the corner from me that is showing it in black & white all next week. I'm very excited.
Ad Astra, Waves, Knives Out, Little Women, The Report, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Two Popes, Hustlers, Portrait of a Lady On Fire, Pain and Glory, Motherless Brooklyn, Just Mercy, The Lighthouse, John Wick 3, Hobbes and Shaw, Dolemite, etc etc like what the actual fuck. INSANE year of movies.
I still haven't seen Jojo Rabbit or A Hidden Life because I'm a terrible person or Ford vs Ferrari because I'm not a terrible person. Wild horses could not drag me to a see Marriage Story or Book Smart. I'm sure they're great though.
2020 has some really awesome looking stuff but its gonna be fucking hard to top 2019.

The tonal shift was a bit jarring at first, but it made the ending all the more effective.

Watched the new Nightmare Alley last night (the original is a personal favorite) and that is an incredibly great movie. The less you know the better. Go watch it immediately. I am not a fan of Bradley Cooper ordinarily but highest recommendation possible for this movie.

Anyone see Scream V? I'm contemplating checking it out. The original is great and the sequels have their moments I guess but I'm torn.
