Terry Funk vs Stan Hansen (AJPW - 9/11/82) People always talk about the 4/14/83 match, but this match is fucking amazing too. It is exactly what you want out of these two. Back and forth brawling with two of the best ever just punching and kicking each other in the face. Funk throws a chair at Hansen at one point and Stan just straight up catches it. These two have some of the best chemistry in the history of wrestling. If they had only wrestled each other for a year straight, I would have been fine with that.

Second
Honestly, I'd probably second just about anything that involved these two. These two brought texas bar fights to Japanese wrestling rings and it was always fucking awesome. I am not 100% sure it makes my list, but I need to take a closer look at it. Seeing all these brawls nominated that I love I need to carefully compare them.

Third
I agree that this match is often overlooked in favor of the '83 match. Awesome, controlled-chaos brawling with Hansen brutalizing the frustrated Funk before he can finally turn it around. And that chair spot is indeed amazing.

Great ass-kicking brawling by both guys. Hansen comes off as a monster with Terry showing off his AJPW babyface chops. Chair shot was amazing with Hansen throwing it right back at Terry.

Fun Fact: The Revenant Bear actually studied Stan Hansen tapes to prepare for his role in The Revenant.
Stan Hansen vs Terry Funk - AJPW 9/11/82
If I had to choose between fighting the bear in the Revenant and Stan Hansen, I may just choose the bear. Hansen is a force of nature and is relentless beating down Funk. There is a point where Hansen grabs a double leg and just wont let go and Funk has to claw and wrench his nose to break free. Funk gives as good as he gets, but everytime Hansen has an answer. Normally, I would be disappointed in a babyface that powders and backs away from a heel, but when you are facing Hansen it is justified. It adds weight to the challenge that you really have to weigh you options when you are facing that crazy sadist. There is a point where Funk throws a chair into the ring and for a second Hansen is going to hurl it back, but he actually takes a step back and makes sure to nails Funk with it. OW! Funk is able to bash his head off the table and then side step the lariat and send him into the ref wiping him out. Hansen blasts the second ref with a LARIAT to a pop. A wrestler I don't recognize holds Funk who takes a brutal Lariat that looks like it could have broke his neck.
Insane brawl. Funk looked great just trying to survive. He sold the match so well in how he was going up against monster, but was not going to back down. Hansen is every bit that bully heel. Huge punches from both guys. Just nasty. Really entertaining brawl. ****1/4

I think this bout is a great brawl with some criticisms stopping it from reaching all time level. The bout starts with both going at each other right away with great intensity. Early on Stan overwhelmed Terry and easily shrugged off anything Terry did. Terry relying on technique while looking for openings as Stan tried to bulldoze him was good basic wrestling. Funk put over Stan huge, e.g. selling like his back got torqued after doing a body slam. All of Stan’s offensive onslaught was great with the stomps and great looking forearms, even some brutal chops. He mixed up the offense by grounding Funk, too, to give him no chance. Loved how Funk put pressure on Stan’s nose to escape a hold and the struggle surrounding it. All of the exchanges were great with Funk’s punches standing out as extra great. I should also mention that Funk’s long-term selling was good with him struggling to move as the match went on. A major criticism is that, though Stan’s in-the-moment selling was awesome (such as acting like his nerves got damaged by those punches), his long-term selling was not present at all. He didn’t sell that he had any after-effects from Funk beating him, and he no-sold a few major strikes. He also looked and worked the same at the end of the bout as he did at the start. There was pretty much zero progression. Still, he made up for it with the offensive onslaught. My fav moment of the match was their great punch exchange post-match with them holding each other, and Funk selling like his body got paralyzed, struggling to breathe, etc. was awesome. Very good match.
