Canis Lupus vs Trauma 1 (Mask vs Mask - IWRG - 9/5/2016)
This was a pretty popular MOTY pick and came in at #2 for me. It was a fantastic match with the highest stakes. I didn't need to really have a huge background in either man to get it. I thought both men where fantastic here, but Lupus really made the stakes and the urgency clearly. Its a fantastic match, with a really great performance from someone I had little knowledge of before hand. That says a lot about the quality of this one.

I adore this match. A glorious Lucha brawl loaded with blood and drama. Absolutely wonderful.

This is on par with the Atlantis vs Ultimo Guerrero match from a few year’s ago, but it’s different. While they both had the drama, this one brought the blood and hatred. A real throwback to the classic mask matches of the 80s and 90s. A five star classic that will stand the test of time.

I think this match will be hurt by a couple of things: it's so hinged upon emotion that I think if you've seen it before (most of the voters, I imagine) that it's almost inevitably worse on rewatch. Additionally, one of the most dramatic spots (stopping the refs hand) has been adopted by people like Rush to the point that it's lost a lot of its uniqueness and meaning. It's almost a comedy spot now.

I can see this. I watched this twice last year and actually felt better about it on second watch, but they were pretty close together. I will be interested to see how this holds up over time, particularly how this holds up when really dissected along with other elite matches.
A lot of matches might come down a bit in this way.

I'm actually not all that high on this one. It's a really good brawl and one of the best lucha matches of 2016, but I felt that there was too much stalling and and not enough urgency during the first half of the third fall.

This is such a wonderful match. The shot after the match is over of Canis Lupus laying in a pool of his own blood and literally slipping in it is so gross but such a great image.

Another one I haven't watched in years but is better than I remember. Great stuff.
