Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels (Montreal – WWF – 11/9/97) On the very short list of most famous and most important matches ever. I always thought it was by far the best Hart/Michaels match and was well on the way to being a best WWF match ever candidate before…uh…ending prematurely?

There are so many matches that get bumped for pre-match and post-match spots. Additionally, so many great grudge matches get a pass on the reg throwing it out. So, why in the heck is this match not talked about? I never actually saw the match in full until recently, and this is certainly the best match these two ever had together. I’m not sure it’s going on my list, but I really do have to think about it.

I voted this #90 on my list.
The famous ending - you may have heard of it - has unfortunately overshadowed the memory of the match itself. A shame, because it's awesome. If I said it had the best "brawling around the arena" segment of any WWE Attitude era match you'd think I was trying to damn it with faint praise, but it really is a heck of a brawl. The real life animosity between these two wrestlers didn't always translate to the ring, but it sure did here. And this may be Michaels' peak for (deliberately) obnoxious character work as he seems determined to incite the crowd to riot the whole way through. The action when they eventually get into the ring is sadly not quite so wild but still strong, and you can see how the finish run is carefully and logically built to set up Michaels tapping out to the ...oh.
If you've not watched this in forever, I'd recommend a revisit, it's a blast.

Late 97 early 98 had a specific vibe. An almost darkness to it. There are so many homophobic signs in the crowd.
This match feels real & gritty in every way. It’s the best match between the two because it feels the most genuine.
It’s not something I see voting for though. The match as a whole leaves me empty.

I remember watching this match, and I remember seeing Bret give Shawn a brainbuster onto concrete.
iirc, it looked very painful.
Of all the YouTube videos I've seen about this match, no-one has ever mentioned this spot, which I find a bit surprising.
