Shane Douglas vs 2 Cold Scorpio (ECW Matter of Respect - 5/11/96) I haven’t watched this in a long time and I was admittedly nervous. 25+ minutes of ECW (And Joey Styles) is a big ask and I have literally never liked Shane Douglas. But goddamn. I couldn’t name a Douglas singles match close to this level if my life depended on it. Fantastic match. The early section of the match where they’re just having a straight up back & forth wrestling match is fantastic. Really enjoyable. There are some really creative spots like Douglas’ slingshot suplex spot on the outside onto the guardrail and Douglas’ table fake out. Some enormous bumps (the powerbomb to Scorpio on the concrete). When I talked in the Scorpio thread about him having major potential, I hadn’t even revisited this yet. And this is exactly the sort of match to watch to see what I mean. We think of his high flying spots first (because they’re amazing) but you can see his other tools here. He has a really good base skill set, can bump like a motherfucker, understood pacing & psychology. Outside of Shawn/Mankind from Mind Games & Bret/Austin Survivor Series, this is as good a match as there is from 1996 US wrestling and a strong candidate for best ECW match ever. This also might be my favorite Joey Styles performance. Great shit all around. Highly recommended.

The story of this match is one that I love wholeheartedly. Two Cold Scorpio challenges Douglas to a title match, but since Douglas is upset at not winning the ECW World title, he dismisses the Television title outright and doesn’t want the title at all, even if he respects Scorpio. So Scorpio is determined to make Douglas respect the title. That’s a perfect way to bring importance to the secondary title, should you execute the finale correctly. One of the criticisms that I can throw at this is that it’s very self conscious. They go out to have a classic match. But fuck it, it’s a classic match. Self-conscious or not, it’s a real epic match. They not only go through the usual classic match moments notes, but they use that to tell the on-going story as well. The opening pure grappling stages were excellent and they built upon that, getting more and more aggressive, turning into a brawl when Douglas blasts Scorpio in the face with the chair. Douglas gets more frustrated with Scorpio and starts to cheat in order to win but Scorpio isn’t relenting and forces Douglas to fight and struggle to everything. I swear Douglas couldn’t even execute his Belly to Belly suplex until the end. This was a wonderfully executed match with great technical wrestling, great brawling, great bumps from Scorpio and Douglas and a great narrative from bell to bell. Douglas cuts a great promo afterwards, appreciating his win, putting over everyone, including Two Cold Scorpio and ECW, but Scorpio nails him anyway. Weird way to end the promo but the promo was great. Probably my favourite ECW match. ****1/2

3rd. For a long time this was one of my favorite matches. I've watched a lot of brilliant stuff since I felt that way. I re-watched it today and it remains a personal favorite and one that I think is worthy of consideration for more than sentimental nostalgia. Douglas' best match I know of. Lots of great high spots with logical pacing in between. An epitome of the best of the ECW style.
A feather in the cap for Scorpio, I'd be interested to see where this stands with his best matches. It has to be up there and I would put it ahead of the Windham match. Any other suggestions?

I think it's the best Scorpio match. The Windham one you mentioned is great. There's another one vs Eddy GUerrero I really like from 3 Way Dance 4/8/95. Those would probably be my top 3. If I could only keep one, it'd be the Douglas match. It's such a great match even Joey Styles is good on commentary

I'm a Joey Styles apologist, but agree this was some of his best stuff.
