Bryan Danielson vs. Takeshi Morishima (ROH Final Battle - 12/27/2008)
The blow-off to a very underrated feud. Easily the most violent match between these two as it's a Fight Without Honor (No DQ) and it's not long until a chain is introduced and the blood begins to spill. Some really inventive spots with said chain while using the normal David and Goliath approach with these two.

I love this feud so much, perhaps even more than Bryan/Nigel. I remember this one being intense and violent as all hell but I need to revisit it. For my money, this is a David/Goliath pairing that works every single time.

It’s baffling to me as to why this one isn’t already nominated. It’s easily the best match of the best feud in ROH history. I might go as far to say that it’s Bryan’s best match ever.
It plays off the previous matches perfectly but doesn’t require those to appreciate. Which is how great wrestling matches should be. It allows them to Be appreciate on staggered levels.
Bryan jump starts this one, coming to so goddamn hot and we’re brawling. Morishima focuses on the eye which is what this entire feud was about. Bryan is so enraged and desperate to beat Morishima. It’s a fiery babyface performance that borders on madness because he knows he has to win. He has no choice. He brings out the chain (I’m a sucker for chains) he’s mauling Morishima with elbow shots and groin kicks. It’s almost overkill to the point you’re pretty sure that Bryan might end up killing him self in the process.
When I finish watching a match, in order for me to call it one of the greatest ever, I have to stop and say “that’s pro wrestling”
Bryan Danielson v. Takeshi Morishima 12/27/2008…. That’s pro fucking wrestling.

I just rewatched this match for maybe the 10th time since 2008. I have always felt this is one of my favorite matches but I’m not convinced this is the greatest match. Just a perfect violent, pissed-off fiery babyface performance by Danielson. Logical escalation and believable near falls. This thing just doesn’t miss a beat. Bryan I’d busted open early but it managed not to become a gore fest which sometimes becomes a distraction for me in some of these higher end matches. As of now my 2023 ballot will have this match at #1. I’m going to stay truer to myself this time around. I doubt I’ll ever find a match as perfect as this one.

This is actually the first match I watched in 2022, but I was busy and didn't came up with a review here. So just gotta say that the start of this match is among the best ever, legendary stuff. Definitely a contender for anyone's top 100, people need to start giving more credit to this one instead of just focusing on the Manhattan Mayhem one: this one is more violent while significantly less difficult to watch.

Bryan Danielson v. Takeshi Morishima (ROH - 12/27/2008)
Match Type: Fight Without Honor
Run-Time: 18:55
2021 Ranking: 6 (187)
I watched this just after voting the last time and it immediately shot to #1 and it’s going to stay there. Every match these two had were great. They’re mostly just urgent sprints full of hate. This is no different. Danielson gets the early jump at the entrance, dives into Morishima inside the crowd and gets on the guardrail just in time to put his fist in the air for “IT’S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!!!”
The match itself is an urgent, violent war. With as clear a babyface/heel dynamic you’ll ever get. Bryan looks so freaking cool as the bloody-faces wild-eyed underdog. The use of the chain is done to perfection. The fact that Bryan had the chain wrapped around big guy rendering his arms useless and you’re still not sure if he could pull it off is something I never tire of.
This is nonstop screaming for joy with a smile on my face professional fucking wrestling.

These Bryan matches do absolutely nothing for me. I'm ready for like Kane or Giant Gonzalez at this point. At least it'd be over quickly.

I voted for this at #1. Peak professional wrestling. I don’t think Bryan ever came close to this again, regardless of all the great things he’s done in WWE or AEW

This was the best of their feud for me, though that's kind of damning with faint praise coming from me given that I had the Manhattan Mayhem match at ***3/4 last I watched it a few months ago and I didn't think the rematches later in the year were that great. This seems like another ROH Bryan match where there's a weird disconnect between me and a bunch of other people who see this as up there with the best matches ever. Unlike most ROH Bryan matches, I would say the awesomely creative opening, nice selling and bleeding from Bryan, and an improved Morishima performance compared to their prior matches pushed this into legit great territory. Also a nice plus that Bryan doing the hammer-and-anvil elbows with the chain wrapped around his arm makes the spot look a lot better than usual. Beyond that, I could nitpick about how some of the chain stuff feeling contrived and Bryan's loose AF triangle took me out of the finish run a bit, which would be true, but really it just didn't hit that next level of intensity that I get from stuff like Sangre Chicana/MS-1 or Fujiwara/Choshu. Kind of hard to put it into words beyond that.
I'm kind of curious about when this started getting re-evaluated as some MOTDC. Looking at the posts about it on WKO at the time, the reaction seems kind of middling.

I remember screaming in joy the first time ingot this dvd. It was my favorite match. I didn’t watch it for years & kinda put it on then back burner. When I watched it in late 2021 it blew me the fuck away again. So I scream it’s praises. I do not do that for a lot of Danielson ROH matches.
