Shinya Hashimoto vs. Lord Steven Regal (NJPW - 4/16/1995)
Surprised this one doesn't have a thread already. When it comes to matches with a more technical approach, I like there to be a lot of grittiness and violence. Thankfully this match has both of those things. Probably the greatest Regal match I've ever seen as he proves himself to be Hashimoto's near equal (and blooding his nose!) in this incredible struggle of a match.

Second. I was sure this already had a thread. Regal is just relentless in working over the broken nose, adding all kinds of cool and violent touches. Hashimoto was able to balance sympathetic selling and ability to maul someone at any given moment better than almost anyone.

Just watched this. Amazing match, of fucking course. Really loved the struggle of the grappling, the viciousness by Regal and the fury behind every Hashimoto attack. There's a moment where Regal is going for the legs but Hash used them to trap his arm in a Fujiwara Armbar kind of hold, so awesome, and the match has plenty of those kind of moments everytime. Regal's nosework was out of this world great, a very interesting way to make himself look credible against Hash, and Shinya's hope spots were inserted at perfect moments. Majestic stuff, really. Maybe my favourite Regal match ever, and definitely on my list.

It's a tossup between this and the Hero/Ohno match for my favourite Regal bout. Top stuff.

Been on a Regal binge this past week, this is one of his best, though not currently in my top 100. He might be the person I consistently enjoy the most who isn't represented in my list.

Regal is a great example of the limits of a project like this. I also consistantly enjoy Regal. He is one of my favorite wrestlers to just watch practice his craft, but he doesn't really have anything particularly close to making my list. This, the Arn match, and maybe the second ambrose match are probably the closest. I'm sure I'm forgetting something. He is in - in my mind at least - an elite pro wrestler who's work just never translated to something like this project and I see that as a limitation of the project (or my approach to it perhaps) more than a limitation of him.

I think the thing about Regal is that he was rarely given a story to run with to push his work that little bit further. Like, part of the reason all his FCW and NXT matches all have a shot at making my list is that he's finally given something with some emotional weight behind it, along with the character clashes that show up.

The Finlay Uncensored match is a classic and the Chris Hero match is too. Both are well worthy of making a list. I know I've voted for the Uncensored match a couple of times, and I don't like Finlay very much.

Ahhh... forgot about those. I'd put them among the others I mentioned.

My favorite Regal bout is against Sting at the GAB. Like the FCW/NXT matches, it's more character/story-based than his typical output.

This match is awesome. Really wish Regal got a longer run in Japan. He would've been awesome in UWFi especially
