Jerry Lawler vs. King Kong Bundy ($10,000 Challenge - 7/16/84) One of the all time great short matches. Lawler gets $1,000 for every minute he lasts. So Bundy splashes him at the starts and drops knees on Lawler trying to beat him right away. Bundy spends the better part of 4 minutes crushing Lawler before Jerry can finally get some distance. Then he’s stalling, running away from the big oaf. Rolling in to break the count and then rolling back out and counting with the ref. Genius. A rare match where every move actually does matter instead of just saying it to say it like in so many other matches.

Second. This was better on paper than in practice but is still quite fun and clever.

A brilliant concept. Bundy was probably the first wrestler I liked when I was a kid, so I have a soft spot. And Lawler is amazing of course. It’s one of the handful of matches that I put on as a pick me up.

This is beautiful simplicity in a wrestling ring. Lawler trying to survive and totally fucking with Bundy who plays cat-and-mouse. Bundy has great forward momentum throughout the match and has really good execution including in his punches. With Lance Russell counting down the time it totally feels like it will hit the ten-minute limit and gives the match a sense of immediacy. The Rude interference makes sense and advances the feud.
