Top MatchesMy instinct was also to say Brock here, but when I think about it this is really close. I think of Brock as a big match worker and he has really excelled on the big stage (esp in his post MMA run). I have rated more Brock matches I think so I am going to go off that for now. Great matches include: Taker (HIAC 10/20/02), Angle (3/30/03), Guerrero (2/15/04), Cena (4/29/12), Punk (8/18/13), Reigns 3/29/15), Taker (8/23/15), Taker (HIAC 10/25/15), Goldberg (4/2/17), Joe/Strowman/Reigns (8/20/17), Styles (11/19/17), and Bryan (11/18/18). For Foley I'd list v Sting (6/20/92), Vader (10/24/93), w/Payne vs Nasty Boys (4/17/94), w/Sullivan vs Nasty Boys (5/22/94), HBK (9/22/96), Austin (5/31/98), Taker (6/28/98), HHH (1/23/00), Orton (4/18/04). That is more matches for Brock, but more borderline matches in there as well and I feel less confident that I am catching them all for him. This one is pretty close, but I am going stick with Brock. Foley has a lot of big ones, but Brock's last 7 years or so has been only big matches and as it turns out that helps him produce a lot of big matches.
Winner - Brock
Versatility
This one seems really close to me. I don't think either one of them are particularly versatile (compared to some of the other people we have all discussed recently). I think they are very even in this regard, but Brock was physically gifted and his versatility was just sort of a byproduct of what was easy for him to do. Foley had to work really hard to achieve any versatility he had. Foley also worked more places and got over more places, demonstrating a sort of macro-level versatility. For that... I'll give it to Foley.
Winner - Foley
ConsistencyFoley gets this one pretty easy I think. I'm not sure there are a lot of wrestlers who worked harder or had to work harder for their level of success. He wasn't always producing bangers, but he did his part. If nothing else, I can't give Brock this because he was gifted a scenario where he should be able to produce really good to great matches every single time out and he has phoned a couple of those in.
Winner - Foley
Charisma/"It" Factor"
If Foley walks away with consistency, Brock walks away with "It" Factor. No one looks like they belong in pro wrestling more than Brock Lesnar.
Winner - Brock
Promos
Another easy one here. I think Foley is at the top of the mountain on this one, top 3-5 all timer. Brock is.... Brock.
Winner - Foley
Elevating Others
I've always thought that all the major players in the Attitude Era and some after should send Foley royalties for their careers. I genuinely believe The Rock, Austin, HHH, and Taker all owe him a huge debt of gratitude and that their careers wouldn't be where it is without him. He also helped HBK, Sting, and Orgon (among others) at key moments. He didn't just elevate them in matches, he helped their characters and status. Brock has shown an knack for making smaller guys look legit on his level lately, but Foley wins this one walking.
Winner - Foley
Offense
Foley had to be quite creative in his approach to his offense and as a result I think he is probably deceptively good in this category. However.... its Brock. The worst thing to ever happen to Brock's in ring work might be "Suplex City, Bitch" being caught no the mic and taking off. However, even if he is just tossing people around he does it like very few people can. Brock is an elite offensive wrestler.
Winner - Brock
Selling
This feels like the polar opposite of the "offense" section. While he gets credit for it here, Brock's selling is not something he is praised enough for. I agree with Elliott about the Mania 31 performance. I think him bouncing around like Ricky Morton's illegitimate guerilla son for Daniel Bryan is also worth note. I am still actually going to give this to Foley. Sure, selling the legit pain of thumb tacks and barb wire is different, but Foley sold perfectly for his characters. This goes back to making others look good. Everyone looked great because everyone could beat the crap out of Foley even though he looked like a monster or was playing a mad man... or a delusional mad man. This one is pretty close, but Foley will get this on be a consistantly good and generally thoughtful seller. Brock has some elite selling performances, but isn't quite as consistent in this regard.
Winner - Foley
Rewatch Value
This is probably the the toughest one for me. I feel similarly to how I felt about Vader/Steamboat. Its sort of a coin flip for me. Brock has been part of some of my personal favorite matches and A LOT of matches that sit right outside my top 100. On the other hand, Foley's career spans more territory and would provide more variety. This sort of comes down to how do I really view the question. If it was "deserted island guy" I'd probably have to pick Foley. If it is who am I more likely to pop a match on from, its Brock. I hate to call draws on this category because it might be the most important for me, but I am going to call this a draw.
Winner - Draw
Bonus Elliott's Question (Brody vs Nigel or best work associated with a crappy wrestler) (.5)
Kind of a tough one. I know there is an "awakening" of sorts on Goldberg as an underrated wrestler. I like the spirit of Goldberg, but I still think he is bad. I didn't like the Brock feud and Mania match nearly as much as the consensus, but it was a miracle all the same. Foley pulled a much better match or two out of HHH (who is in fairness better than Goldberg). He also pulled notable matches out of some more limited wrestlers in ECW. I think in that I have to give it to Foley
Winner - Foley
Count
Foley: 5.5
Brock: 3
Draw: 1
These two are about as opposite as you can get. One man approached wrestling as a business and was as physically gifted as anyone to ever step in the ring. The other was an every man who loved wrestling and sacrificed his body for it. Effort isn't everything. Brock doesn't have to "love" wrestling to be a great wrestler and guess what, he is a great wrestler. However, this feels about right. I really like Brock. His highs are very high and he is a somewhat singular presence in wrestling. He is a modern day Andre in my mind. However, Foley's heart and effort are undeniable. He carved out such an endearing space in wrestling and I think really highly of him.
