For the final match of the first round I wanted to include two hoss fights. I suppose there could be some squabble over the definition of a hoss fight, but its my tournament so I get to pick. These are, in my estimation, two of the best hoss fights in wrestling history. They are big bomb fests of violence within their respective contexts. One is amongst the most universally loved WWE matches in the modern era I can think of. The other is a very highly regarded Joshi classic that by definition won't get as much general buzz, but is also a truly violent spectical. So... which is better.
Round 1 - Match 4
John Cena vs Umaga (Last Man Standing – WWE Title – 1/28/2007)

I went with Cena/Umaga. It stands out as a far more memorable match for me. Hotta/Kong is like the 3rd best Joshi match of 1994. Cena/Umaga is the WWE MOTD.

Ahhhh.... that is why everyone else is voting for Hotta/Kong.

Might be the closest one for me to vote on so far. Cena-Umaga is one of the greatest babyface vs. monster heel matches ever. Not to mention the heel still looked incredibly strong in defeat, which is not an easy thing to do. But it's the unparalleled amount of violence in Hotta-Kong that puts it over for me. Not just an all-time great stiff striking match, but the hand work is as engaging as it is brutal.

I went Cena/Umaga. I don't think it's the WWE MOTD, but it's top 3.

But it's the unparalleled amount of violence in Hotta-Kong that puts it over for me.i The finish of Cena/Umaga is a literal attempted homicide.

Not saying all these are necessarily better (aside for #1) but to me Cena-Umaga is just another really good match from 2007 WWE, rather than a 2000s classic.
1. Shawn vs. Orton SS07 DX vs. Orton/Edge NYR 07 Finlay vs. Kane Smackdown Finlay vs. Rey Cyber Sunday Shawn vs. Mr. Kennedy Shawn vs. Edge Raw

I will say that Cena-Umaga is my pick for WWE MOTD and the 4th greatest WWE match ever.

Gotta say I wasn't expecting a Kane match and an Edge match. 😊
I'll add them to the list of stuff to watch!

I haven't watched the Michaels/Orton match in forever but I quite liked it. I watched Michaels/Kennedy last year and thought it was really fucking good, which I wasn't expecting. The Edge match was one I liked a bunch at the time. I think the DX/Rated RKO match will hold up as at least being decent and I liked that at the time as well.
Finlay/Rey is badass, as basically every Finlay/Rey match is.
I don't think any of them are even close to Cena/Umaga.
Finlay/Kane intrigues me, though...

Yeah... that is a list of matches that I haven't watched probably since they happened, so I am intreagued to see them get some hype here. I'm going to be binging some wrestling tomorrow so maybe I'll check some of these out.

I went Hotta/Kong. They are both on my top 100, but Hotta v Kong is a good bit higher. The violence and brutality in that match is just hard to top. Cena v Umaga might be the best version of the larger than life WWE main ever. It feels like a power rangers fight, ya know... giant robot vs big monster. It also somehow remains visceral and brutal in a way that so many WWE matches don't. Both are great in my mind, but Hotta v Aja takes this one for me.
