Joeg proposed this project and sometimes genius doesn't take many words.
"I was lurking over at the GWE board and saw the classic deathmatch thread. I was thinking it might be a fun project to do,Greatest Gimmick/Super Libre/Deathmatch/Garbage Brawls. Would there be any interest in such a thing?"
YESSSSSSSSS.
But I do think we should clarify exactly what it is we're doing.
Top 100 for sure.
Is this "best brawls ever"?
Or is this "best gimmick matches ever?"
Is it both or is it just one?
For example. Flair vs Funk GAB 89 or Hansen vs Funk 83 are stone cold locks for a "Best Brawls Ever" list. But aren't gimmick matches and end with DQs.
Bret Hart vs Owen Hart SummerSlam Cage Match and Ultimate Warrior vs Randy Savage WM VII Career vs Career match are gimmick matches. But they definitely aren't brawls.
Even Fujiwara vs Super Tiger 12/84 is technically a "Death Match" but I don't think it would really fit the spirit of what this project is supposed to be, unless I'm misreading Joeg's original intent.
Presumably this won't just be about death matches or gimmick matches, but anything that could be described as a "brawl?"

I was thinking about this too as what counts and what doesn't. Personally I was thinking about the Funks vs Abdullah and Shiek series. None of those matches were a gimmick match, but each match certianly had its share of gore. I think basically if a match is a brawl with double juice and/or special set of rules then that the match qualifies. So Owen vs Brett, Warrior vs Savage, and Fujiwara vs Tiger don't qualify. Flair vs Funk and Hansen vs Funk and the Funks vs Abby and Sheik would presumably qualify. I think the key qualification for this project is really excessive violence and blood.

That was my thinking. Basically if you would describe it as a brawl, it qualifies.
One big one I'm already debating is Hokuto/Kandori. I dunno what to do with that match.

Yeah, while not exactly a brawl that match had excessive violence and blood.

This is probably more a question for after we put some perimeters around this, but I'm going to be curious how something rates here vs greatest match ever. Is it just a matter of the matches that count from your greatest match ever list more or less being transferred over as is, or do matches move up and down based on the specialized criteria and focus.
For example, if Kandori vs Hokuto counts and - hypothetically - you have that as your #1 GME. Is it your #1 here or since we are looking at brawls/deathmatches/plunder matches, does that change the standard and focus? Obviously, its probably a personal decision.

I will be moving matches up and down based on, for lack of a better term "brawliness."
I'll have some overlap and similar rankings because my original GME list was so brawl heavy in general. But even some lucha Apuestas matches are gonna take a hit for me. Santo/Espanto Jr 86 or the When World's Collide tag are both all time classics that I wouldn't include on a list like this. Perro vs Konnan from When Worlds Collide would be a more viable option than either of those matches.
I've been poking around this forum and other various match lists and have about 350 matches I'll consider on some level for the project.
