Terry Funk and Dory Funk Jr vs Abdullah the Butcher and The Sheik (“2 out of 3 Falls” – AJPW – 7/15/1979) This will be my second highest ranked All Japan match and a top 10 overall contender. Another one of my favorite matches ever. These 4 guys had another 3 matches that will absolutely make my list, but this is the best one. Wild, all over the place brawl with an unmatched atmosphere and an awesome crowd. Terry Funk at his best.

Currently my working #1. Terry's performance here is otherworldly - blood pouring from his face, he rises from the ashes to save his brother, in what might be the most authentically comic book moment wrestling has to offer

Thirded. I'm not as high on their other matches as others. I think they display some good ideas throughout their series, but this is the only one where they really pull it all together for a classic. Really an epic match with Sheik/Abby cheating like mofos, Terry giving a legendary selling performance, and Dory showing a side of him you rarely see as a fired up face fighting for his brother.

Was my #1 in the puroresu.tv before the 80s project. I don't see it slipping out of my top 10.

A violent and bloody match with a lot of drama. The crowd heat is tremendous for this match. The fans are fully behind the Funks in their quest to defeat the evil garbage wrestling legends, The Sheik & Abdullah the Butcher. Terry Funk’s performance is amazing. Arguably the 1979 Match of the Year.

In terms of Desert Island Matches, this is right up there. The best match of a great feud. I had this at #16 on my ballot, which on reflection seems waaay too low

Rewatched this again last night. Oh my god, the raw emotion. Dory trying to stave off Butcher and Sheik! Terry crawling about on all fours with a possibly broken neck! Bloody revenge! Elbow drops! I’ve seen thousands of matches with ‘better’ wrestling. But when it comes to presenting a chaotic, cathartic spectacle? Perhaps none.

This was disappointing for me compared to the 1977 and 1978 matches. I thought the 2/3 falls format might make for a different pace and it did but not an improved one. This didn’t have as much of a feeling of being out-of-control. That being said it was still there and Terry did lots of great selling, especially in getting counted out to end the second fall.

The hottest crowd for any of these matches so far, which is saying a lot. Also the most epic, as the 2/3 falls format gives us some actual finishes (until the third fall), and lengthens the match so it hits more structural beats. As far as the work, it is fantastic as always, but I think I liked the work less than the 77 or 78 matches, which felt more memorable to me. Though, this is still awesome. Terry is still masterful in his selling and his comebacks. Terry takes some nice bumps over the top rope and I love Dory having to drag him back to their corner after the count-out loss. The crowd erupting for his karate chops when Terry finally recovers and makes his comeback is another classic moment. Another great post-match, this time even the ring hands have to get involved to fight off Abdullah and the Sheik! Three matches in and I can totally see anyone ranking them in literally any order so far, though for me I'll go 77 > 78 > July 79 right now.
