Second
I don't know what to make of this match. I thought that the first time I saw it and I still feel that way. It is unquestionably great, but without much context for the style and time I have a lot of trouble really figuring out how to compare it to other matches. I have watched a good bit of the French catch that has been posted here and there and I think this is singular among it (from what I have seen at least), but I still struggle with how to make sense of its greatness. It is on my list, but where it winds up is really up for grabs.

This match made me instantly think Cesca must be one of the ten greatest wrestlers ever. He probably isn't. However, having an introductory match come across that way is quite the achievement.

I have never seen this match, but fortunately for me I'm fluent in French so I can follow the commentary. I'll write up a transcript when I get the time. I think this match is blow-away great.
Can someone point to where the rest of this French wrestling is to be found?

Thanks. I'll do my best to write up the commentary this weekend. I'll pay extra attention regarding any possible mention of date and venue. Update: no luck, sadly. Watched the match twice. It's great, and will make my top 100, and now I have to go watch all the French catch stuff I can find ...

For the overall purpose of this project, I'm not as interested in how Cesca/Catanzaro compares to the limited amount of other French footage we have or even necessarily other stuff from the 60s. I'm interested in comparing it to Jumbo vs Tenryu, Misawa vs Kawada, Flair vs Steamboat, Lawler vs Dundee, Hokuto vs Kandori, Tamura vs Han, Santo vs Casas etc etc. I do anticipate starting threads for best matches of various promotions, styles, decades etc as the project continues on. Maybe even best feuds/rivalries. I think stuff like that is both interesting and useful. But at some point, you have to think about matches from everywhere.

This is unquestionably a great match. It will definitely require another watch from me at some point to give it further context. They were definitely ahead of their time. I couldn't believe the amount of hurracanrana's. It might have been helped if I had an easier time telling them apart. Any tips for this?

There is just something about this that throws me off. I didn't expect in the 2010s to discover a new type of wrestling. Its like being fluent in 10 languages and then someone comes along and speaks something completely different. I am probably not explaining it well, but the long and short is I just get sort of mentally bogged down with how to deal with/think about this match. I am looking forward to putting it up against some of those matches you mentioned though.

Recent developments have this match dated to 1957. This match continues to amaze me.

What?! That is bonkers. Do we have a month or day for it, or just the year?

The date it aired is 2 May 1957 as per some new findings on Wrestling Classics and the INA archive. I'm trying to get an account to look at this treasure trove, but it's a tricky business.

This is super cool!
One day, there's going to be a fuckload of old school European wrestling that magically appears online and it is going to be a glorious day.
