Holy hell, it feels super awkward nominating this match given recent events. I watched this for the first time a few weeks before the allegations came out and I was blown away by it. I'm sure we all have a number of repugnant shitheads on our ballots, but this feels fresh so I don't blame anyone for not wanting to nominate and/or watch it. Once/if I get around watching the remaining 40-50 matches on my ballot, I could see this scrapping the bottom 20.
The atmosphere they create surpasses Joe Vs Kobashi. The hype package, the entrances and the ring introductions are some of the best ever. They start the match with a tackle and a scrap and the room erupts. Starr is still able to work some of his technical stylings and it doesn't look a hair out of place. They take a tumble outside and they actually manage to pull off a convincing countout tease spot. The boxing segment worked exceptionally well, but I thought the match's cracks started to show when Starr started licking Delvin's blood from his hands. Starr is a tad of a hammy actor and they get a little bit too melodramatic and self-indulgent with the story telling. All of the hi-jinks with the referee and the belt were a bit too much for me. Despite all this, I was on edge of my seat, wanting to find out what would happen next. The ending comes out of nowhere and the crowd go ballistic. This is an excellent match, that could been a serious contender for one of the greatest matches ever if they just managed to put a lid on the over-dramatic and self-indulgent stuff.

Totally get this nomination, but this sort of let me down. I think Cactus nailed it with the too melodramatic and self indulgent part here. This has been my biggest problem with Starr over the last 2 years or so. The hype is there and the matches build well and then they more often than not feel overbooked and overblown. I think I am in the minority on this so I don't fault him at all for it, but it isn't for me. I just haven't quite felt as connected to his work since maybe Summer 2018. His great mania weekend that year and then a few matches that summer felt like a turning point.
This benefits from a few things. First, OTT's hype packages in the past few years are second to none. Second, OTT has done really well to build to big matches over relatively long stretches and this might have been the longest, most successful build. I agree the atmosphere was white hot. I am not sure it was Kobashi/Joe hot. It might be different types of hype, but the point remains, this was face melting heat for the match. It would have taken effort to make this bad. They delivered a really fine match with lots of little moments of brilliance throughout. It is a very very good match and a truly elite crowd/energy/hype job.
I much preferred their SSS16 match from earlier in the year. That felt like a callback to the 2017 David Starr meeting 2019 Jordan Devlin. I should nominate that.

I don't care for this. Crowd was great.
