I suspect this is somewhat divisive as a match and I totally get it, but I always sort of suspect that has to do at least a good bit with fan factions and how they often rub each other the wrong way. Those who are most into the elite can be... abrasive and generous with their praise. I heard this called the greatest tag match ever in the aftermath. I am not remotely ready to say that, but I did think it was a very very very good match. I think the core of my take away here can be summed in my feelings of the Bucks. They aren't my favorite tag team, but I find the notion that they only do spots and don't tell stories to be absolutely ludicrous. This match may not the kind of storytelling everyone likes, but its there. They weave in a few different dynamics and even - I think - subtly begin a switch in trajectory for Omega and Page. Here you had the division between the elite, with Page saying he is outright done and Kenny being on the edge of odds with the Bucks. Kenny approaches it as a competition and Page seems to outright not like the Bucks anymore. For the Bucks, their patience, especially Matt's, has completely run out for Page and it is sort of built around his drinking. That drinking is also starting to put cracks int he relationship between Omega and Page, but the wins keep coming and they keep coming together when the chips are down. Now in the match we get lots of little places where they forward this. I won't go over all of them, but my favorite touch came with borrowed finishers. At one point Page uses Omega's finisher (popped my tits off). On the other hand there is a moment where The Bucks use a combo move that Ibushi and Omega used to use on Omega and he kicked out at one, got a little fired up. Maybe I am reading in, but I think there was something to Kenny drawing inspiration from the past (a former partner left behind) and Page drawing inspiration from Omega. Up to this point, and even a little after, they were teasing Page being the one that was going to turn on Omega (even at the end of the match). Shortly after this thought they found their uneasy balance and it is sort of Omega that is now (as of Aug. 20202) feeling like he is the less stable member of the team. I don't think this is even leading to an outright turn, but this was the first time they signaled in really nuanced ways the entire history that informs Kenny's position in the company (leaving his best friend Ibushi and the country he loves, going in with these guys on building a new wrestling brand, not being the singles star he was before [obviously kayabe], and holding all his friends together). I honestly love the Omega/Page dynamic in AEW right now and I found this to be one of the most compelling chapters. It is what I want from wrestling. Its nuanced. You can follow regardless of your level of knowledge, but the more you are into them and their past the more payoff their is, and - most importantly - it doesn't talk down to its audience.
The action is really wonderful. Its very much what you would expect from these guys, but I think it is really sound and well done. I get that Omega isn't everyone's cup of tea. I have always liked him, but I think I am gaining a new appreciation for him lately. He is a master of controlling the ebb and flow of a match. He is so athletic and explosive that he can speed up or slow down a match on a dime. This is a ways off my list right now. For all the praise I have, it doesn't hit the highest highs and it doesn't really do wrestling the way I tend to favor. even still, this is well worth watching and I really want to get another look at this soon.
