Somebody give me a hand full of Inoki matches to help me turn the corner on him. I was always low on him, but saw some multi-mans in the past year that I like him in a bit more than I generally expected. I also feel primed to like Inoki more right now for whatever reason. Shoot me a message or reply here with some recs (and links if you can). Right now I have these on deck: Inoki v Vader 12/27/87 Inoki v Vader 1/4/96 Inoki v Robinson 11/12/75 (I have this in two parts. If anyone has it in one video that would be awesome) Inoki v Brisco 8/5/71 Inoki vs Masa Saito 4/27/87 is my favorite. Crazy fucking match that ends with....you know what...you should just watch that one. Do we have this one laying around anywhere on the interwebs? I found an earlier one on quick scan but didn't see this one? Same with the Choshu match

I used to hate him and thought he was really boring. But after seeing more of his work I've come to really like him and he's someone I'll seek out now as opposed to someone I used to avoid. I still prefer Giant Baba. But Inoki was more talented.

I really like/love his top matches, and I like the way that he carried himself like the baddest man on two legs. He wasn't a great worker but nine times out of ten I'd rather watch him than Baba, who had undoubted face charisma yet IMO came across more awkward than Inoki.

I uploaded Inoki vs. Chris Markoff (5/16/69) for a complete change of pace, a wild bloody brawl vs. a cheating foreigner in the vein of Baba/Fritz. In fact, Inoki skeptics might find his JWA work in general more palatable since he didn't own the company and wasn't being booked to satisfy his ego.

The hate Inoki got going back to the DVDVR 80's set always struck me as hella weird. Dude was working at a high level from the earliest JWA footage up to the late 90s, had insane ace presence, and was one of the most gifted mat-workers out there. On paper, that seems like a clear top tier resume to me and I have yet to see anything to change my mind on that.
A good under-the-radar Inoki from me is the 1994 Tenryu match. Really nice ace type performance from Inoki and it has a pretty interesting layout as well.

Inoki hate predates the 80s set too.
Cap, you should check out the Inoki vs Hogan finals of the IWGP tournament for a really fun spectacle. 6/2/83
edit And I'm glad the Tenryu match was brought up. I've been wanting to rewatch that actually.

Watch a choshu v Inoki match from 89 I wasn't a fan of.
I also watched that Hogan/Inoki match and sort of loved it, more in the "this is fun" way than thinking this is a great match.
I'm still dabbling in my recs and going off what I had watched before, but I think I like Inoki a lot, but he feels sort of hit or miss to me. Either the match compliments who he believes he is and who he wants to me.... or it kind of shows the flaws in that thinking.

I mean to post this earlier. I really came around on Inoki through some of those recs a while back.
I still pick Baba.
I think Baba's highs are higher and I generally like his contributions to matches a little more. Baba feels more giving to me and it weirdly works for him. His brand of heroism in a match is just cooler and resonates with me more while Inoki feels a bit more plastic, for lack of a better term. In turn, Inoki matches tend to either click with me or not.
That all said, I'm not sure anything Baba has ever done has been as cool as the end of Inoki vs Saito from 4/27/87. The finish of that match is other worldly and no one oather than Inoki could pull that off.

Now this is a great pairing. I'm surprised Inoki is winning here, even though I went with him. Baba did really well during 2016 GWE while Inoki didn't even make the Top 100.

If you are just limiting it to in-ring work then I don't think there is much of a comparison. Baba's matches were entertaining but hardly any you would call classics . Inoki on the other hand could be a bit repetitive in the ring but knew how to make his offence seem incredible real and dangerous and I think he had more top end matches.
If you want to consider the booking as well, Baba absolutely destroys Inoki and there is no discussion. Baba in my opinion is the second greatest booker of all time and through his booking created the most critically acclaimed Main Event Scene in Wrestling History with Tsuruta, Hansen, Misawa, Kawada, Taue, Kobashi, and Williams.
