Alright, I'm going to direct nominate a few new things and this is #1 on my list because I know I am alone on this. First, a few points of general context:
Pros
- I LOVE the Page/Omega story they have been weaving over the last year and I really liked this chapter.
- I also think Page is doing his best work in 2020 and I generally like Omega
Cons
- The momentum and atmosphere for this match were killed by an uneven show and Hardy's concussion earlier in the night.
- They worked this for a crowd with no crowd. While I get they should work for their context, I'm not going to knock them because the limited crowd was drained.
When I first saw it I thought this was genuinely the best match in AEW history. I have since watched it back twice and I do think it is probably at best #2 after Cody v Dustin. I could also see it being just a half notch under some other great matches from this year, depending on your taste. That said, I still think this absolutely phenomenal. The way that FTR split Omega and Page before the match comes into the work here in some really compelling ways. FTR is the ideal "team". They work fluidly in this match and their tag team chemistry leads to virtually all their success. On the other hand, Page and Omega are sort of disjointed. They, individually, can out do both Cash and Dax. It is just pitch perfect tag team vs two great singles wrestlers wrestling. The post match - though completely dropped by the commentary team, especially JR - puts this over the top into genuinely great territory for me. This is a really strong story within a match that reflects the story being told more broadly. I thought FTR did a great job wrestling their kind of match and selling their struggle to hold onto that style. Omega and Page are selling their own dynamic as well as their struggle to keep the belt. Great work from everyone and I think this will hold up well. It feels like a match that people would have lost their mind for if it happened in Greensboro in like 86 or something. I can see people going back to this in 3-5 years and thinking it is better in a vacuum. Maybe that isn't necessarily a "good" thing, but it isn't a "bad" thing, especially in this type of context.
