Hiromu Takahashi vs. El Desperado (NJPW Best of the Super Juniors Final - 12/11/2020)
A late contender for MOTY. While the previous two BOSJ finals were more all-out bombfests, this was more of a hate-filled grudge match between two rivals. Desperado pinned Takahashi earlier in the year during the Junior Heavyweight Tag Title tournament through nefarious means and then submitted him earlier in the tournament using similar tactics. They also faced off twice in 2018 with each man taking a win. There were still a lot of big bombs in this match, but the history and hatred between these two is really what fueled the match. Despite going 30 minutes, there was no padding. They got to work almost immediately with chops, guardrail whips, and Desperado once again targeting the knee like he did in the previous match. Hiromu sold the damage well and while it did not prevent him from hitting most of his offense, there was a stretch in the middle where he desperately did all he could to avoid damage and struggled to hit an apron powerbomb and suplex. But things really took off when Hiromu tore at Desperado's mask. And rather than try and hide his face, Desperado WILLING TOOK THE REST OF HIS MASK OFF. One of the most stunning images of the year. Things broke down into a brawl until both men tried to finish each other off with the biggest moves in their arsenal. Hiromu got the win in a bit of poetic justice, but it was an absolute star-making performance for Desperado who is clearly destined for big things down the line.

Second. Excellent way to finish the year for New Japan.

Hiromu is a fucking star and they should make him their biggest name when Naito finishes his main event run. 2020 WOTY, for sure. But I wanna talk more about Desperado here. I'm so glad New Japan pushed Despy this year, he's been one of the most consistent yet underrated workers of the company for ages. And, guess what, he delivers in a big way.
This was an amazing match, easily the best of the COVID Era for me, and even the NJPW MOTY I would say. The match was already great, but when Hiromu tore at Despy's mask and then one of the most shocking, coolest, badass moments in modern pro wrestling happened, it just turned into something else: the climax of a great rivalry, which was worked wonderfully throughout this year. I can't believe how wonderful the Junior's division has been in 2020, compared to the atrocious booking of the Heavyweight scene.

Yep... Strong MOTY contender. Tons of emotion and drama. Really awesome spots that were worked into the overall narrative well. This is a late contender for sure.
I'll be really interested to see how this holds up in a few years. I suspect it will age well.
