Lola Gonzalez vs Pantera Surena (Hair vs Hair EMLL - 9/12/88)
This is an awesome match. Bloody, wild, uncooperative, classic, slugfest. Wow.

Had a little unexpected free time this afternoon and saw this nomination... thought what the hell.
LOVED this. I think Elliott nailed it in a pretty succinct way. The two big terms that stand out are uncooperative and slugfest. There is a protracted segment where (I believe) lola will not let Surena back in the ring. It feels almost awkward, but just enough to be a good thing. Nothing is made easy in this to the point where this strikes just the right balance of lucha cooperation and struggle for me. I also loved the near fall where I thought there was about to be a damned riot at the end. Great stuff. Highly recommend.

This really just came out of nowhere and blew me away. Thank Kadaveri for finding this one.

This ruled. If you were in a Hair vs. Hair match with someone you hate, why wouldn't you kick their head in every time they try to get back in the ring? No idea of the backstory to this but there seemed to be a lot of hate there. Then it gets better when Pantera manages to grab Lola by the foot, drags her out of the ring and lays the smackdown on her. What an awesome match and also I imagine someone easy to watch for someone who finds Lucha hard to get.

Oh totally agree. This is grit and malice bell to bell. I just found that part where Lola was kicking her in the head every time to go sort of long for what I expected, but it really complimented what they accomplished on the whole. A great zig where I was expecting a zag.

Yep, this was awesome. Some vicious kicks and submission holds throughout. Pantera takes a good beating and makes a nice babayface comeback.
Lola is nasty! She is great in that tag against the crush gals as well. I don’t know much about her but I’m wondering if she needs a deeper dive.
That nearfall at the end was cool. It felt like things were about to fly off the handle at various points and that added to the match.

Lola Gonzolez VS. Pantera Surena (Hair vs Hair – EMLL – 12/9/1988) Current Rank: NA Trending: WAY UP
This is like a quasi-joshi inspired female version of Sangre Chicana vs MS-1. Ok, the comparison isn’t perfect, but that should be enough to motivate anyone who still hasn’t seen this to check it out. I watched it for the first time a bit ago after Kadaveri found it and turned us all on to it. At the time I thought it was great, but I wasn’t quite sure about it making my list. Well… I’m sure. This is going on. This is a stone cold classic brawl that is just enough awkward and uncooperative to elevate everything they do. They start buy just launching Surena into a fan and somehow manage to push up against the line of unhinged for like 25 minutes. This is absolutely awesome. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to put the finishing touches on their list.

Lola González vs Pantera Sureña (Hair vs Hair EMLL - 9/12/88)
The first time female wrestlers wrestled in Arena México was in 1935 July 7th to be exact then they were banned from the most iconic in the country but they returned December 21st 1986, the two wrestlers waging their hair wrestled in AJW, Pantera Sureña was known as La Galáctica, under that alter ego she had a legendary match against one of the greatest joshi wrestlers in history (Jaguar Yokota) it was a fantastic brawl but half as wild as this one, the history of women’s wrestling in México is very rich and this match is their magnum opus, it’s the women’s version of Sangre Chicana vs Perro Aguayo that’s quite a compliment, Lola González would be Perro Aguayo here and Pantera Sureña would be Sangre Chicana, I love how Andrés Maroñas (the announcer) seems genuinely worried about everyone’s well being, I recall an instance where Pantera Sureña did a senton to the outside and he said: ‘‘¡Niña cuidado!’’ translated to english it’s ‘‘Girl be careful!’’ sounding concerned about her, that’s something that doesn’t happen men’s wrestling, the announcer wasn’t accostumed to watching women taking the risks these two were taking, the main reason why I think this match is worth reviewing is the announcers’ reaction to the action, that’s the appeal of the match for me, it’s an amazing brawl don’t get me wrong but if it wasn’t for Maroñas this match wouldn’t have ranked 60th in my Greatest Match Ever list, to be fair if the announcers weren’t as special as they were I wouldn’t be watching lucha at all to be honest, the first fall is great, Pantera Sureña is thrown out of the ring by Lola González and she didn’t let her get back to the ring, the second fall is an amazing babyface performance by La Panterita and got away with the fall but it wasn’t enough to keep her hair, Lola submitted her after 27 grueling minutes of tough and gritty wrestling.
