Now that 6/9/1995 has made #1 again: Is tag team wrestling superior to singles wrestling, if done perfectly? Is THE best match imaginable a tag team match? Or is 6/9/1995 just an outlier and the best match imaginable has to be a singles match?

Interesting question. I decided to move this to its own thread as it might be something folks want to explore.

I personally prefer singles matches because I think it's easier to tell a good story, and you can see all the wrestlers in the match working the whole time, while in tags usually half of them are resting. But I guess a match where four wrestlers are working at elite level has to be better than a match with just two wrestlers working at elite level... It's an interesting question that I've never thought about.

I've always been a fan of singles matches, and I prefer the mano-a-mano approach to wrestling, but a good tag team match is very tough to beat if put together right, and 6/9/95 is the perfect example of that.

I've talked about this before on here. I personally prefer singles matches and think of the epitome of pro wrestling being one v one. However, I have been coming around a bit more on elite tag wrestling in general. I haven't looked carefully at it, but I suspect that tag matches have done better on my list over time. Regardless, singles matches do much much better for me on the whole. My highest rated tag match this year is 11.
This isn't so much an issue with tag matches as it is multi-person matches in general, but I think one of the biggest issues is the added variables. Often times more variables means there is a higher chance that someone does something that takes me out of the match or breaks my immersion. I think it is fairly intuitive. The more cooks you have in the kitchen the harder it is to create a coherent dish, let alone a world class dish. Of course, when it works it often really really works.

I'd say tags have a higher floor and probably a higher theoretical ceiling but singles matches have a higher practical ceiling. It's a lot harder for a wrestler to single-handedly drag down a tag match since whatever weaknesses they have can be compensated for by their partner and even extremely limited workers can be hidden on the apron and utilized to play only to their strengths. On the other hand, a GOAT-level tag match requires four elite workers performing at the top of their game rather than two. That's what makes 6/9/95 so special and also an extreme outlier.
