So, I was thinking about something. I agree that the very best matches are able to work on a vacuum as well as taking its context into acount, but, gotta admit, the context usually makes a cool ass match much better, don't you think? Therefore, I wanna ask some questions: what are the best wrestling rivalries per year, and what are those couple of matches that can help you to *get* that rivalry? The picks don't need to be top 100 contender matches (although I would say a great wrestling rivalry has to produce some great matches along the way!), just the ones that are key to understand the rivalry as a whole. For example:
1986: NJPW vs UWF. -I'd go with the Gauntlet match, Fujinami/Maeda and the Elimination multitag match.
1993: Hokuto vs Kandori -I'd go with both their singles matches and the tag match with Aja and Eagle Sawai.
1997: Austin vs Bret -Gotta go with WM 13, the underrated IYH 14 rematch and the Canadian Stampede match.

Carlos Colon vs. Stan Hansen 1987
Carlos Colon vs. Stan Hansen (1/6/1987-bullrope) Carlos Colon vs. Stan Hansen (2/28/1987) Carlos Colon vs. Stan Hansen (3/14/1987-cage)
Their feud technically started in 1986 and honestly I think the 10/12/1986 match is way better than the 2/28 match (also the first match I would recommend anyone unfamiliar with Hansen). But it really is the perfect example of the local, beloved babyface not only seeking revenge against the invading heel but looking to drive him out of the territory permanently.

Danielson v. Morishima 2007
9/15/2007 (aired 11/30) Man Up PPV
11/3/2007 - Glory By Honor
12/29/2007 - Rising Above
This is one of my favorite rivalries. These matches are sandwiched between their two best matches.

That's a reeaaaally good pick Micro. I grew up with that rivalry and it has aged pretty damn well.

Syuri vs Utami
I had the two ppvs matches at 9.75/10 and the GP match at 8/10.
Kairi vs Meiko The first one is really good, the second is a top 10 match of all time, and the final match is awesome too.
