This was an incredible hard-hitting bloodbath. Danielson continues to show everyone that he's the best wrestler on the planet by putting on a clinic that elevated Page. I loved the small touches that Danielson would add such as clawing at Page's cut as he attempts the LeBell Lock or giving Jerry Lynn a smug acknowledgment after hitting a Gotch piledriver. All of Danielson's nearfalls felt like they could have ended the match as he has won other matches with the same moves and holds in the past few weeks. I wouldn't call this a complete Danielson carryjob as Page more than brought his own. He's a natural babyface with excellent timing. I thought this was even better than their time limit draw. I can see myself giving this the full five on a rewatch.

A perfect match, to me: closes up a chapter or story to the best of its ability. As Bryan was announced the graphic reads that he had not been pinned or submitted in over 4 hours of bell-to-bell wrestling since coming to AEW. If you remember, Danielson had made it a point to use a different finish for each opponent he had. He had the ability to adjust to every situation and work his opponents' match better than them and give them a finish geared just to them. But, he had no such finish able to put Page away and had to run through a 'boss rush' of his catalog of finishing maneuvers to try and put Page away and through exhaustion and blood loss, he could not best the younger champion. Page on the other hand grew tremendously in this feud. If you watch Page's demeanor from their first interaction (where Page looked like a deer-in-headlights), minute by minute in this feud Page's confidence grows and you can visibly see it in how he carries himself. A bloody Page doing jumping jacks while an even bloodier Danielson struggles to stand illustrates that this story is about to reach its conclusion. Danielson made Page a star in a way that Kenny Omega never could and that's not a knock on Omega or Page. Bryan Danielson is simply the greatest wrestler who ever lived and he knew just how to bring the best out of the guy the entire company is being built around. A perfect match.

I more or less co-sign all of the above. This was absolutely aces. This is very much the kind of wrestling I like. I'm going to watch it again, but I'm leaning towards full marks and this maybe finding a spot on my list next time around. Regardless, coming off MOTY rankings being fresh in everyone's mind... this is going to be tough to top this year.

I hesitated to call the first match 5 stars because it felt like a stepping stone. Albeit as a huge piece of the story it was an all time classic but I think the conclusion helps this. The double color helps this visually. I think the fact that because of the storytelling that critics could not say this was a “carry-job”. I think the fact that I can’t tell if Page really wasn’t ready to be champ or if it was all designed to look that way and that at the end I absolutely buy him really helps this.
Like all Danielson matches, the little things are perfect but those little things feel so much bigger in this.

I feel like I'm on a different planet when watching these top AEW matches. I like the company and wrestlers, Danielson in particular, but they never resonate as classics with me, and this one is included.
It's a very good match - so my review is hardly negative - with good performances and a gross blade job by Bryan who blew Page's out of the water (who didn't wuss out on the blood either) but this didn't take me on the journey that I need to see this at a certain level. Cody Rhodes vs Dustin Rhodes did, this just didn't. Perhaps its because I'm cold on Hangman Page as a wrestler, champion, just in general but I'm more than open minded enough to see through that. Or that's what I'd like to believe. It's not like I hate him either. In fact, I found his performance to be really good with my favourite spot of the match being Page mocking Bryan, doing his star jumps while sporting bloody. Lots to love about the match but emotionally, this didn't hook me on a level that I value to be ****1/2 or *****.

I feel the same way, not just with this match but with the best AEW matches in general: they're great, but not elite (no pun intended). This is a close match to be elite tier, though, maybe the best in the company since the Omega/Mox Barbed Wire (and yeah that final explosion sucked but the actual match is linda brilliant). What I liked the most about this match is that it managed to be different enough from the first one in order to justify it's existence, and that was the most important thing about the match for me because I didn't like the time limit draw finish. But hey we got that so we could have this now, and oh boy they delivered in a big way. It's gonna be hard for any AEW match to beat this at their MOTY.

I can see/understand the last two takes. I have yet to give an AEW match the 5 (haven't rewatched this yet). There are many that I really like and think might age well into a classic, but nothing that punches me in the mouth as an instant classic (a larger conversation for another thread probably). However, the reason I think this one might do it is how layered it is without feeling contrived or on the nose. I was absolutely enthralled by the story being told. They way they built off the last match as well as previous matches from AEW, the way the implemented the blood, they way dragon plays to the judges and page pushes the pace, the way they used Dragon's previous finishers... this match is loaded with emotion and content and all of it jumped off the screen. Then again, I have been on the hook for the Hangman arch for a while and think this worked that in really well.

I took a break from my 2021 GME rundown to watch this. I don't want to jump the gun, but my gut reaction is that this is the greatest match in AEW history and one of the greatest matches I've ever seen period. I'll have more to say after I watch it again and have more time to process it.

I rewatched this finish on AEW’s YouTube channel. This thing is just so well done. Bryan not being able to skin-the-cat and dropping, before being able to get hit by the lariat and desperately. Rolling to the ropes out of instinct are just perfect moments.
Bryan still thinks he’s got Page where he wants him until the end.
I have rewatched many high-end AEW matches over the past month, Including Punk/Kingston that I praised to the moon. This was better.

If anyone has a commercial free copy of this, let me know. I found on on bilibili, but the sound is off by a second. I really want to watch it without the commercials.

I don't THINK it is since AEW's U.S. contract is with TBS/TNT. I think it is just their PPVs. I just poked around and it didn't look like I could pull it up.

After watching it again, I feel comfortable calling this the best match of at least the past four years as well as the best of Danielson's career. It was as if all of his prior AEW matches were worked with the goal of getting over spots for this one. It's well-established by this point that Danielson likes to work long and grind it out, so Hangman taking it right to him at the beginning to throw him off his game was great stuff. Danielson's stalling in the early minutes made excellent use of the rule of threes. The first time he powders to the outside, you're surprised. The second time he does it, you're annoyed. The third time, Hangman levels him with a tope. Danielson worked the match as more of an opportunistic underdog heel, which I think is the best role for him. First he worked over Hangman's buckshot arm after countering a tope by sending him arm-first into the guardrail, then he switched to working over the cut after Hangman got busted open. I don't mind the arm work not being a factor down the stretch since Danielson mostly abandoned it after the bladejob. This hit another level after the double juice. Danielson being unable to skin the cat due to blood loss after he did so effortlessly 59 minutes into their previous match was a particular highlight. All of the buckshot lariat teases were great, especially the one Danielson avoided by doing the Kenny Omega collapse. Danielson using so many different finishers to win his previous matches meant all the near falls and submissions down the stretch had plenty of drama. This is a lock for my next ballot.
