If this isn't the most brutal World of Sport match, it's right near the top. They mostly stick to wrestling in the first round, but that largely goes out the window after Dynamite delivers a cheap shot in the ropes at the beginning of the second. Plenty of stiff blows and big bumps, and Dynamite draws an incredible amount of heat with his blatant disregard for the British rules. Truth be told, the match probably should have been thrown out a dozen times over given how far out of hand things got. But even Kent Walton was marking out by the end, calling it a hell of a bout. I actually considered this for my 2021 ballot, but I couldn't quite bring myself to pull the trigger. Still, I'm going to go ahead and nominate it to encourage others to check it out.

I remember back in the day liking this and the Finlay match a lot, like, MOTYC levels of liking it. Marty Jones is a guy I need to watch more stuff about, because he brings so much character and intensity to the WOS style, the two things I miss the most when watching it. Honestly, this might be my favourite Dynamite Kid match as well.

One thing that stood out to me in Bret Hart's book is him talking about how much Dynamite Kid was scared to death of Marty Jones, who trained him. I wonder what Jones did to make Dynamite so wary of him.

I checked Bret's book, and I didn't see anything about Dynamite being scared of Jones. On the contrary, he describes Jones as Dynamite's chum and mentor and says Stampede's booker brought Jones into the territory to appease Dynamite after he had been booked to do a series of quick jobs to Bruce Hart. He also relates Jones' incredulous reaction to being given an Australian kangaroo gimmick. "A fookin' Australian what?"

Am I mis-remembering it then? Obviously so. Thanks for the the correction.

I corrected the date since 2/5 is the air date.
Anyway, really good stuff. This might even be a low-end MOTYC for 1983. Starts off slowly but builds to a manic finish.

I actually like this a lot more than many WOS matches that are probably "better." Just an awesome match. One of Dynamite's best.
