Donn Lewin vs Leo Garibaldi (California, 04/30/51) This was a tremendous technical hold/counter hold type of match. It was comparable to stuff like Jon Cortez v Keith Haward or even Billy Robinson v Nick Bockwinkel in that it's a rough, believable match with a palpable sense of competition. Both guys are really working, you see them struggling, straining for counters that fail as often as they come off. Watching old matches like this it's always fun to see things that no one does anymore. Here the grappling built to many cool moments that look so fresh 70 years later: a diving body press countered by a body scissors, the same body scissors countered by a giant swing, a rolling short arm scissors, a short head scissors into a piledriver, etc. Props to the excellent commentary as well. The monologue about being glad to see guys who wrestle instead of what he refers to as "hippodrome artists" might be the earliest version of wrestling vs sports entertainment I can think of. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzvsDTbVo0Y

Second, great action. This is a very technical match but one that is easy to digest. I've seen it a while ago but I remember thinking it was very creative an innovative, there are a lot of interesting holds and counters but it never feels like they repeat themselves. One of the best match of this era that we have on tape ****1/4

The first fall is 11 minutes long and consists of a large control segment by Lewin that was cut short by Garibaldi’s comeback, Garibaldi struggles a lot during the exchanges of holds and he can’t find his rhythm until the 9 minute mark when he starts to make his presence known, Garibaldi ended up winning the first fall in very convincing fashion.
The second is a bit shorter, Garibaldi is able to use the momentum gained in the first fall to his advantage and get away with the victory, this fall is a far cry from the last one, Garibaldi almost never lost control of the situation and won very comfortably after 8 minutes with very little back and forth troughout the finishing stretch.
If you like Joint Promotions’ golden era this is made for you.

Yeah this is absolutely awesome. Crazy fast paced. One for folks unsure of 50s wrestling. This is a great place to dip your toes in the water.
