Fucking awesome match. I've been watching a lot of Bruno lately as he's finally really clicked for me and Graham is actually one of his best opponents. Graham's reputation as one of the worst big name wrestlers ever seems wildly off-base if his Bruno & Dusty matches are any indication. This is an intense double juice brawl with two insanely charismatic wrestlers. My kind of wrestling. Great stuff.

Bumping this since people are watching stuff for their lists. It's the one where Gorilla Monsoon is the guest ref. Might be in my top 5 US matches.

Bumping this. One of the best US matches ever. If you were going to watch one Superstar match, this might be the one.

Similar to Bruno/Patera with Monsoon as the referee, it's a great bloody brawl.

Yep this was awesome, great interactions between Graham and Monsoon. Graham is really good at begging off and getting across the toughness of Bruno. The crowd loves Brunonand that really serves to elevate this match.

Gorilla might be the best Guest Ref of all time.

Oh this was fun.
Admittedly never saw much Graham but I love Charisma, I love his selling and just the way he moves around the ring. The crowd was fired up for Bruno and every time Superstar snuck his way back into control, Bruno got his fire back at just the right time to make the crowd pop even harder
Gorilla as special ref is a damn perfect fit. Sometimes guests refs can really derail a match because it’s obviously going to play a part but Gorilla was in for all the right beats and the blood of both men smeared on his massive white shirt is a sight to behold. He also takes the heat for the finish.
I will consider this for my list since I didn’t end up putting much 70s stuff on my list and I really really love this Superstar performance.

In December 2023/January 2024 I thought I was so cool creating all these new PWO match threads and I thought I was breaking new ground on how badass Superstar Graham is, only to be on the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto to find out good brother Elliot has already got that base covered. Well let me echo his points. Please watch all the other Bruno/Superstar matches first because this match bucks the formula of Graham puts on a hold, Bruno escapes and puts on the same hold but better formula and is instead just a kickass brawl.
WWWF Heavyweight Champion Superstar Billy Graham vs Bruno Sammartino- WWF MSG 8/1/77
Rare Saturday bonus review. The fiancé is making a Tiramisu for Christmas Eve tomorrow. Double bonus bitchin’ Tiramisu and a bitchin Graham/Sammartino match! Headed to Quebec on Tuesday to see the in-laws glad I could finish all the Graham title defenses in MSG.
Graham vs Bruno is night and day from Graham vs Dusty. Bruno just brings out the best in Graham. This is a total departure from their formula of Graham applies a Bruno breaks the hold and applies the same hold as Graham. This is wrestled like a blood feud street fight with Gorilla Monsoon as the Special Referee. Superstar jumps him at the bell but Bruno battles back and the first half is all Bruno punches and stomps. Great Superstar bumps on the back drop and the high knee miss on the turnbuckles that leads to a single crab near fall. Superstar tries to grab a rope to choke out Bruno but Bruno gets a hold of it and chokes him out. Monsoon is call this down the middle but letting shit fly. Superstar ball shots Bruno and busts him open with the Championship belt. This shit is great, he misses the top rope flying knee. Bruno misses a charge. Superstar tries to capitalize but Bruno powders. Bruno comes roaring back! Slamming Superstars into hard metal objects until he bleeds. BEARHUG~! Graham flails and whacks Monsoon as he tries to break the Bearhug. It is a slug fest with Bruno winning! Then Wet Blanket Gorilla Monsoon calls the whole thing off due to too much blood from both men. Vince said he was there two referee from a wrestler’s perspective make sure there is a winner. What a little weenie Monsoon is even if he did get slugged by Superstar.
Now why all the heat is on Monsoon, you know there would still be a fuck finish but this doesn’t take away from how awesome of a brawl this is! I have really been loving their series and this is such a departure from the rest of their matches which I love. You need to watch the whole series to appreciate this and appreciate how kick ass both wrestlers are! ****
