I've seen gifs of this match sporadically on twitter these last few months so I thought I'd give it a shot, and holy shit am I glad I did because this ended up being the most creative and crazy 1v1 ladder match I think I've ever seen. It's a complete spotfest so there's zero selling to speak of, but when the spots are this outrageous it's hard to care about that. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vo5RmTOTBb8&ab_channel=TravisMcNeill

I found out about this match from Simon at HANDWERK Reviews. People are in two distinctive camps around this match. Some fans, whether for the down time between big spots, how long it takes to set up the contraptions, or the sloppy punches. If you’re like me, though, you love every fiber of this thing. A tiny Canadian indie fed, known only in small wrestling circles because Kevin Steen and El Generico cut their teeth there, put on easily the most disgusting and unbelievable ladder match I’ve ever seen. The first time I watched it, there were multiple moments where I went “oh god, no, no, no” At the top of my voice, to the point where people around me asked if I was okay. That should tell you everything you need to know about it. Two brothers from the cold north beating the hell out of one another is always gonna rule, but these two do things with ladders nobody has done before or since, probably because they’re too dangerous to replicate. There are too many spine-twisting bumps in this thing to pick just one as a favorite, and I don’t want to spoil anything, so you should go check it out for yourself. If you’re a freak like me, you’ll love it. Don’t go in looking for consistent selling or an emotionally cathartic story. Just be ready to watch the greatest (or worst) fireworks display you’ve ever seen.

I recently saw this match on a stream and didn't get it. Other folks loved it though I guess? I felt like I was watching a stuntman tryout instead of a wrestling match. They spent a lot of time setting up objects for spots and stuff and ignored the wrestling part to link things together, except for the beginning and the end. The two certainly took some hard bumps and put their bodies on the line, so kudos to them. It just didn't feel special to me. I understand why some people might find this match appealing, there's a certain element of "dudes just being dudes" here and maybe some look back at this particular time in wrestling (or life in general, the mid 2000s...you had to be there) with nostalgia and daydream about when they messed around with their friends/siblings doing backyard wrestling stuff. It didn't really hit me like that though.

Ultimately this doesn’t appeal to me, but it kinda represents a time and place that doesn’t need nostalgia because it’s kinda shitty. Some folks really get into this and they turn their brains off and let the insanity envelope them. I find it more of an intriguing curiosity to revisit every decade or so and kinda soak in the crazy and weird and never think about it again. It’s pretty much exactly how I am with the Ren Faire
