Stan Hansen vs Genichiro Tenryu (AJPW - 3/27/1988)
I wanted to watch all of these matches to figure out which one was my favorite on the way to nominating them. And then I blew it right away and forgot about the March 9th match. Anyway, I watched this one and I'm not sure it was in my head as my favorite, but if they end up having a better match I'll be really happy. This ruled. It was like the spiritual predecessor to Vader/Hansen, Vader/Cactus, Regal/Finlay, Hash/Tenryu 98, whatever you wanna pick. Just sheer brutality with these two monsters just killing each other. Hansen tries to permanently close Tenryu's eye. Hansen actually picks up Tenryu after TWO lariats just to punch him in the face repeatedly. This has to be nominated. Holy shit.

This is more of a "decente match with some good stuff in it" than a overall good match. It's the pacing that's awfully off here, because the strikes, the selling, the crowd, all cool, but they slowed the match too many times for how short it was and how much their strenghts asked for a sprint. But man, did it rule when they worked like that here and there.
I hated the ring awareness in here too. There were some key nearfalls that didn't work because they didn't bother to keep the oponent far from the ropes. It's specially dissapointing when Tenryu starts his comeback with two great slaps and a brutal lariat that knocks Hansen out: he inmediately goes for a pin, when Hansen's half body was on the apron, basically.
The finish sucked as well. Hansen had the match and the titles won, but he instead prefers to force the ref to DQ him. Not good.
