These two fought in the semi final of the G1, in a direct rematch of the year before, but this time with a sold out, cheering crowd, finally back at the Ryogoku Kokugikan for the G1 final shows. Perfect atmosphere, and a clearly pro-Naito crowd, who wanted reteibution against last year's defeat.
What a wonderful match, guys. Ospreay is having a hell of a year, but this might be my favourite of his performances because he motivated Naito to go all out once again, like in his peak years. I'm not into the "Naito is broken" argument, he still can go, just a bit slower than usual, but he's not Tanahashi-level bad, not yet. And he managed to go toe to toe with fucking Ospreay here, in a very intense match with a super hot crowd. They showed a lot of chemistry, with wonderful reversals.
Then the ending happened. Ospreay knocked out Naito for real and had to guide him through the last couple of minutes of the match, and man those minutes might have been the best carryjob I've ever seen. The match didn't become worse at any point, it still looked like the great bout they were having previously. Wonderful stuff, and thankfully it was just a false alarm and Naito recovered at the end.
One of my favourite matches of the year, by far. The return of the living legend known as Tetsuya Naito.

Looking forward to watching this. I was going to watch it today, but the NJPW app on fire was acting up. I'll pull it up on my computer soon.

Naito put in a really good shift, raised up the level of his offence which is usually some of the weakest and sloppest of all the main stars of New Japan. Ospreay did a really good job at selling his neck, at certain points, too. But the general structure was a little bland and they peaked too early for the length they went which was 10 minutes too long. **** max because these two had very good individual performances in terms of their roles in the match.

Third. This was flawed but really good nonetheless. I'd argue Ospreay's (lack of) neck selling was the weakest part of the match and some of the transitions were imperfect, but the latter is part and parcel of modern wrestling I suppose.
Naito starting off slowly and looking cumbersome only to grow into the match and go toe-to-toe with his younger, fitter opponent was a great story and the escalation and reversals were well done.
Regarding the finish, I think ignorance would have been bliss since knowing that Naito was legitimately loopy made the sequence look worse than if I had not been aware. Otherwise, I could have chalked it up to great concussed selling and an overzealous Ospreay getting the tables turned on him.

Bumping this in case it got lost in the avalanche. Last one on the updated index of nominee's page then I'll start going through all the matches I haven't seen or commented on in the "Nomination Process" section"
